Help Build a CO2 Video Camera

Donation protected
Hello! We are engineers from Sudo Room, a makerspace in Oakland California. We would like to build a camera that helps make CO2 pollution visible.

Normally you can't see CO2, which makes it hard to understand the impact that it has on the environment. But, CO2 absorbs light at a very specific wavelength (4.26 micrometers), so with a camera that is sensitive to this type of infrared light, and a filter designed to specifically block out all light except this, we will be able to see CO2 emissions from power plants, gas flares, and of course, shipping vehicles.

We can combine this camera with an HD cinema camera, to make a movie camera capable of capturing both visible light, and greenhouse gas emissions simultaneously. With additional filters, we will be able to record methane and other gases too!

Unfortunately mid-infrared cameras are expensive, but, it looks like we can get older ones for a little less than $20,000 which we can modify to record digital video with the right hardware. We will document our work to help others build similar cameras, and  help people who wish to record pollution with the equipment we build.

It is our hope that by making it easy to record pollution, we can have a better understanding of its impact on the planet.
