Help Bryan Heal: Support for Vet Bills
A few weeks ago, my best friend’s cat, Bryan, was attacked by a dog.
Backstory on Bryan:
He was a neighborhood stray that followed one of her other cats home one day. She fed him some canned food, and then he basically moved in. They started calling him Bryan… short for Bryan Setzer, the stray cat squatter. At the time, she didn’t want to just assume he didn’t have a home, so she took him to the vet and found that he was neutered but didn’t have a chip. So, she had them do a thorough checkup and give him all his shots (just to be safe). Then she posted him on their subdivision’s Facebook page and asked if he belonged to anyone. Several people said he didn’t belong to them, but they fed him when he would come visit them. So, she decided to claim him. I guess he actually claimed her… because… cats. So, for the past 2 1/2 years, he’s been their cat. But he loves to roam the neighborhood and visit his old homies (except during the winter or when it’s raining… he likes to stay inside when it’s like that). During the warm months, it’s not unusual for him to stay outside and wander around. The only reason I feel like I need to explain his backstory is because there are people who would come down on her for even letting him outside in the first place. He absolutely loves to roam around and visit people, and she thought it would be cruel to just suddenly force him to stay inside.
Well, one night she was on Facebook and saw a post that said a husky attacked a cat in the neighborhood. Then she scrolled down further and saw a picture of Bryan where someone was asking if he belonged to anyone other than “Miss Linda’s porch.” After she figured out where he was, she took him to the emergency vet hospital. He ended up staying the night there because he was still in shock, and they didn’t want to traumatize him even more by poking and prodding, etc. So, they gave him some IV antibiotics, pain meds, and fluids and let him rest overnight. X-rays showed no broken bones (which was actually surprising given the extent of his injuries). He lost 2 of his canines and had several deep puncture wounds. The worst ones were on the inside flank of one of his hind legs, and one that punctured his anal gland. A week later, they had to take him back to the vet because he got an infection in his hind leg and a bad abscess in his abdomen. They kept him overnight again, trimmed some of the abscess, stitched him up, put a drain in him, gave him a little t-shirt and a cone, and put him on 2 different antibiotics. A week later, they removed his stitches but were still very concerned with the incision site, so they kept him on the double dose antibiotics and said he still needed to wear the cone until the wound healed. They tried a onesie, but that didn’t go very well. She said it appeared to paralyze him because as soon as she put it on him, he dropped to the floor and his legs just wouldn’t work (cats are so dramatic). And those donut-type cone things won’t work either due to the position of the wound. All of this to say, they could use a little help with the vet bills. He still has a lot of healing to do, and he’ll probably have to go to the vet a few more times, but he’s doing a lot better than he was. Please consider contributing. Anything helps. Thank you.
