Help Britt Cross the Finish Line
My name is Britt Jackson. I'm a mother, a wife, a reproductive rights activist and community organizer, and have spent the last few years of my life working towards becoming a certified professional midwife.
As a student midwife and birth worker, I've walked beside almost 300 families during their journeys to bring their babies into the world. I've held hands, wiped tears, held space, fears, and triumphs, and have received new life into my hands to usher into the world.
As a queer, black midwifery candidate, my journey has been full of extreme barriers and obstacle after obstacle. Through all of them, I've been fortunate enough to continuously find ways through and onward. After a long and difficult journey, I am now only TWO births away from completing my training.
Despite being so close, the end of my student journey presents another large barrier. I am currently facing the major challenge of having to travel across the state for two out of four of my clinical sites multiple times a week for clinic, and for births - one in Southern Minnesota, the other in Northern MN. This has created a huge financial burden, and has taken a huge toll on my family, especially because working is nearly impossible between the four clinical sites and attending births. I've worked hard to come up with money by working for DoorDash and InstaCart, but we're still currently experiencing housing instablity with not being able to make rent, food instability, and our children definitely will not have a Christmas this year. We need help to make ends meet until I finish my apprenticeship.
Below are the expenses I am raising money to cover:
- travel expenses for clinical days and births
- lodging while away at clinical sites
- rent for December
- general expenses for the next month
In my home state, there are very few midwives of color, even fewer black midwives, and no black, queer certified professional midwives. Once my training is completed, I will be the first.
Your support will enable me to continue to serve and represent my communities in out-of-hospital midwifery care, and to continue to bring respectful, empowering care to families facing oppression and inequities in every other aspect of their lives. After fighting for years to get here, I can't fail now.
I so deeply appreciate the love and community given to me throughout my journey to becoming a midwife. Each and every consideration of support, share, and kind word has meant the world. Thank you for considering helping me cross the finish line.
Love and warmth,
Britt
