Out of the grit and grime of New York City in the 1980s, a small bar in Brooklyn gave birth to an Indie Rock scene that laid the groundwork for the borough's reputation as “the hippest city in the world”. This was an artistic explosion if not a commercial success. These years later, a tight knit and loving community is the outgrowth of this group of musicians who chose to cooperate instead of compete.
Internet radio personality Rachel Cleary had visited that bar in the waning days of its notoriety but became curious about the scene years later, after interviewing several of the musicians involved. This documentary film is the story of her journey of discovery of this community in “Before It Was Cool: The Brooklyn Beat from Lauterbach's”.
The film combines archival footage of the actual bands performing in the '80s and '90s, along with current interviews with band members and Cleary's insights and lessons from their conversations. Turning all this stuff into a major motion picture is an expensive proposition. The principals involved in the production have committed all the resources they can to completing and promoting this movie. We are asking your help to get us over the finish line. Please help us with a donation to bring this rollicking, feel-good documentary to the silver screen!
