 In February, Sonia attended what she believed would be a routine asylum appointment in Maryland. Instead, she was unexpectedly detained by ICE. Officials claimed she had missed a prior appointment, despite Sonia's consistent attendance at every appointment required of her. Since that day, she has remained in detention.

 Shortly after her detention, Sonia learned that she was pregnant. While being held in custody, she experienced severe health challenges and did not receive any prenatal care, or any other medical care at all. Tragically, she suffered a miscarriage. She was not offered a proper medical exam or obstetric care following this and was only given Gatorade and tylenol. Sonia has also struggled with high blood pressure, depression, and declining physical health while in detention. Her husband reports that she has not been eating regularly, has become increasingly weak, and continues to face serious medical concerns without receiving adequate care.

 Osman worked tirelessly to secure her release and hired an attorney to advocate on her behalf. Legal efforts included filing petitions to prevent her transfer to another detention facility and seeking avenues for her release. Despite these efforts, Sonia remains detained, though her attorney continues to fight and is hopeful.

Sonia's two teenage daughters witnessed their mother being taken into detention and have struggled deeply with the trauma of that experience and the prolonged separation that followed. The emotional toll on the family continues to grow with each passing month.
