 There is an empty bed in a college dorm room at one of this country’s top universities tonight. It belongs to my son and my proudest accomplishment, Luis Alejandro Olarte.

 I want to start by telling you about the first few hours that follow after your loved one gets detained by ICE, because I think that is the part people do not understand. Your husband and your child leave the house on a Tuesday morning. You get a text from your son that says, “we have just been detained by ICE, I love you.” Then the phone goes quiet. You call and it rings out. You call again. You start calling anyone who might know something, and every person tells you to call someone else, and every office tells you they cannot give you information. Hours pass and you do not know what state they are in, whether they have eaten, whether they are hurt, or whether you will hear anything at all before the day ends. I have never been so afraid in my life.

 Luis Alejandro is nineteen. He finished high school with his associate’s degree already in hand and earned a full QuestBridge scholarship to Washington and Lee University, where he should be starting his sophomore year right now. He is an exemplary young man. I am his mother, so of course I say that, but I am not the only one who does.

 On September 1st, his father, Luis Felipe Olarte, was driving him up to campus. We didn’t want him to fly there due to the recent news about ICE enforcements in the airports. On I-95 in St. Johns County, FL, they were pulled over, and both of them were detained by immigration agents without any reason given to them. Our family car was towed off the side of the highway. Neither of them ever made it to Virginia.

 My husband, Luis Felipe Olarte, is the hardest working man I have ever known. Every opportunity our children have had, he built with his own hands. Watching our son earn that scholarship was the proudest day of his life.

 They are being held at Baker Correctional Institute in Sanderson, Florida, also known as “Deportation Depot.” I have spoken to them, and I wish I had not asked so many questions. It is hot inside and there is no relief from it. It’s the kind of heat that you experience for a couple of hours when your A/C breaks in the summer, only this one doesn’t stop. Ever. The food is not enough, and my husband has been sharing part of his with our son. There is nothing to do, hour after hour, day after day. There is no way for us to put money in their accounts, so they cannot buy soap or food or anything at all.

 Today, my son should be in a classroom he earned his way into. He is instead sitting in an illegal detention facility with that heat and nothing but his thoughts.

 I want to also be clear about who my family is, because I know people might wonder. We came to this country legally, on visas, in 2018. We have had an asylum case pending in immigration court since we got here with a hearing already on the calendar.

 We have gone to every appointment. Everyone in the family holds a valid work permit. Neither of them has ever been arrested for anything in his life.

 They do not deserve any of this.

 Luis is our provider. He is the reason the rent gets paid and the lights stay on, and with him gone, everything in this house is already falling behind. I am doing what I can with our daughter at home, and I am telling you honestly that it is not enough on my own.

 All of the funds raised here will be used to help bring my husband and son home and support our family through this situation. We expect bond to be set at roughly $10,000 for each of them. The funds will go toward their bonds, the bills and household expenses that are stacking up while our main provider is detained, recovering our vehicle and covering the towing fees, and getting Luis Felipe and Luis Alejandro back home once they are released.

 They will walk out more than 250 miles from home with no car and no way to reach us. We still have not found our truck. It was towed that morning, we do not know who has it, and we expect that the fees climb every day.
