Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Lorne Trevors has been a staff rep since 2000 in the province of Ontario and moved to Nova Scotia in 2011 due to some health issues. Lorne serviced mostly in the 905 area. Some of you may or may not have had the opportunity to work with Lorne or get to know this wonderful man! I am reaching out to you and asking for your help!
In 2011 Lorne and his partner Leander moved to Nova Scotia for Lorne to have a better quality of life, he was experiencing some medical issues that involved his lungs and breathing. For a brief period, things were going very well. He had settled into his new role of staff rep in the CUPE Halifax office. I visited with Lorne and Leander shortly after their move and noticed that he appeared to be feeling better and was enjoying life on the coast with the sea air. In 2013 Lorne's health began to change, he experienced a bout of congestive heart failure which forced him on to Long Term Disability which is where he has remained never to return to his role as staff rep in the Halifax office, a job he truly loved and enjoyed.
Shortly thereafter Lorne began to experience other symptoms that led to another diagnosis called pulmonary fibrosis which reduces the lungs capacity to take in oxygen. Lorne has followed every piece of medical advice that was put in front of him so that he could improve his lungs and maybe reverse the condition but to no avail. It was now determined that the best course of action was to try and maintain or stabilize his current level of health. I have never in my life ever met someone with so much faith, love and determination to push through every hurdle that he had to work with or try and overcome. Lorne's partner always by his side supporting every decision or trial that they had to endure. One of the best days of their lives was when they officially became married! Their commitment and love has been incredible during this most frustrating and frightening time in their lives.
More recently there was another diagnosis that came into play further complicating his medical condition. He was diagnosed with non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. His medical condition now becoming even more complicated.
Lorne has a fantastic medical team that are involved in his care including his husband Leander. At one point they were informed that there may be a procedure that could potentially save his life. A double lung and liver transplant, but this procedure would need to be performed in Toronto and he would have to qualify by having a heart test performed first. If he passed the test he may qualify for the transplant..this was the one thing that could possibly change his condition. There were numerous prayers and thoughts sent out into the universe to help make this happen.
Unfortunately, the test came back that his heart would not be able to withstand the very complicated surgery. This news is devastating to Lorne, Leander, his family and all that love him!
I had this most difficult conversation with him a few days ago. Lorne was told that there was nothing more that could be done for him. Lorne will have to remain in a palliative state of care. I can't even believe that this dear man whom is loved and respected by so many who is so full of love and life and faith is faced with something that so many of us fear and would prefer not to deal with but somehow he has to face this daunting prognosis!
Lorne has two wishes. He would prefer to live out the rest of his days in the comfort of his home with his husband and amazing partner Leander, his fur babies ( Minnnie and Max), but in order to do so they have to modify their home. Lorne can only leave if he uses a wheelchair in his home in order to save on his energy and oxygen levels. They will need to modify doorways and the bathroom for him to be able to live at home.
His other wish is to live long enough to meet his grandchild. Lorne has two adult children, Matthew and Katherine. Lorne had the opportunity not that long ago to attend Katherine's wedding and now she and her husband are expecting their first child, Lorne's first grandchild. His wish is to meet this little miracle who is due in October.
So Brothers and Sisters, I am reaching out to you in order to help make his wishes come true.
