As many of you know my mother and step father have been living in Puerto Rico for the past 3 ½ years and have recently been dealing with the horrific after effects of Hurricane Maria. Since the storm made landfall on September 20th, Hurricane Maria has wreaked havoc on the island, causing a level of widespread destruction and disorganization. Almost two weeks after the storm abated, most of the island's residents still lack access to electricity and clean water. After 10 days of my mom and step father living at their condo with no electricity, losing running water was the last straw. They decided to get in the car (thankfully were able to get gas prior to storm) and drive to a hotel that they had stayed at in the past. Lucky for them, the hotel had an opening and they have been staying there since Sept 30th. Although safe, with electricity and running water, conditions are still less then desirable and unfortunately, as of 5 am this morning they have been told they have to leave in order to make room for FEMA.
My sister, Aunt and I have been working to get them back here as soon as possible. My mother relies heavily on a nebulizer to breathe, which is impossible to do without electricity. We need to get them out of there AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. We were able to find tickets for them to come back on Sunday, October 15th which is GREAT, but will be very trying on them as they will basically be starting from scratch. They will need to find an affordable apartment, purchase some type of vehicle, car insurance, health insurance, and even just bare necessities. The only items they will bringing back from Puerto Rico with them are their clothes.
I have such a wonderful network of friends and family and so many of you have asked how you can help, which is why I have started this GoFundMe page. No amount is too little. We appreciate anything anyone is willing to give.
