<div>In the Fall 2023, the play under the working title of <em>Baile en la Tumba</em> or Grave Dancing, was performed as a stage reading in English at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco, California.

<div>The play imagines the last moments of Mexican artist, José Guadalupe Posada’s life. What might he have thought about? What of life and death in his story? He is visited by the spirit of his most iconic image, La Calavera Catrina and a lively discussion ensues.

<div>We are planning the play to open in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, hopefully within the next four months (by the end of January or early February 2026). This wll be the first time the play is performed in Mexico, the home country of Posada, with Mexican actors and in Spanish.

<div>Then and now, the play is work in progress. The intent was to evolve play development leading to a touring production in Mexico and eventually the United States as well as selected European countries.

<div>What's the significance?
</div>

<div>The play is about Mexican artist, José Guadalupe Posada and his encounter with his creation, La Calavera Catrina. Posada created perhaps 20,000 images and although culturally uniquely Mexican, his collective work contains an unintended aspect reflecting a universal condition. Its creative energy symbolically travels beyond borders, because there is timelessness and universality, especially in the calaveras (skeleton images) who remind us of our mortality, offering a chance for us viewers to find humility and perhaps a commonality in the futility of our human follies.

<div>Thanks to Posada’s imagery, we are given an opportunity to connect with each other not as nationalities, races, or basis of political party or religion, but simply as people. History is about people and through its study we can see and learn much. The beauty of this is subtle and there is irony too, as the message comes from a man of humble origins buried without fanfare in a common grave. How could we not want to share this and especially in the time now where there is a need for unity?

Posada creó unas 20 000 imágenes y, aunque culturalmente únicas en México, su obra colectiva contiene un aspecto involuntario que refleja una condición universal. Su energía creativa traspasa simbólicamente las fronteras, porque hay atemporalidad y universalidad, especialmente en las calaveras (imágenes de esqueletos) que nos recuerdan nuestra mortalidad, ofreciéndonos a los espectadores la oportunidad de encontrar la humildad y quizás un punto en común en la futilidad de nuestras locuras humanas.

<div>Gracias a las imágenes de Posada, se nos brinda la oportunidad de conectarnos entre nosotros no como nacionalidades, razas o bases de partidos políticos o religiones, sino simplemente como personas. La historia trata sobre las personas y, a través de su estudio, podemos ver y aprender mucho. La belleza de esto es sutil y también hay ironía, ya que el mensaje proviene de un hombre de origen humilde enterrado sin fanfarria en una fosa común. ¿Cómo no íbamos a querer compartir esto, especialmente en un momento como el actual, en el que se necesita unidad?
