<div>Life changed forever for our family on April 25th. Just weeks before his high school graduation, my little brother, Brian Carreno Ortiz, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. At just 18 years old, he’s now in the fight of his life.

<div>That morning started like any other—Brian got up, took a shower, and got ready for school. But something was off. His vision suddenly became blurry. He thought maybe he was just tired, but when he got to school, he couldn’t read his assignments. Scared and confused, he went to the nurse, but nothing they tried helped. He had to call our mom in a panic, unsure if he’d ever see clearly again. It was the beginning of a journey no family ever wants to take.

<div>Since that day, Brian has been hospitalized at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland. He’s now going through his third round of chemotherapy under the care of his oncologist, Dr. Michlitsch. Despite the fear and exhaustion, Brian’s spirit remains unshaken. He’s a kind, thoughtful young man who loves hiking, spending time with family, and dreams of becoming a psychologist so he can help others one day. He’s holding onto that dream—and to the hope that he’ll soon be well enough to go to college and finally get his driver’s license.

<div>But this journey has come with enormous emotional and financial strain. Our mom has had to stop working to be by Brian’s side day and night. Our dad is working three jobs just to keep up with rent and basic expenses. He often drives long hours just to bring Brian his favorite fruits in the hospital, trying his best to brighten his day.

<div>As the oldest brother, I’m doing all I can to help, but it’s been hard—especially on our youngest brother, who’s been struggling to make sense of it all. We’re doing everything we can as a family to stay strong and support Brian through this battle.

<div>La vida de nuestra familia cambió por completo el 25 de abril. A solo unas semanas de graduarse de la preparatoria, mi hermano menor, Brian Carreño Ortiz, fue diagnosticado con leucemia mieloide aguda. Con tan solo 18 años, ahora enfrenta la batalla más difícil de su vida.

<div>Ese día comenzó como cualquier otro. Brian se levantó, se dio una ducha y se preparó para ir a la escuela. Pero algo no estaba bien. De repente, su visión se volvió borrosa. Pensó que era por el cansancio, pero al llegar a clases, no podía leer ni concentrarse. Fue a la enfermería, pero nada funcionó. Llamó a mi mamá asustado, sin saber qué estaba pasando ni si volvería a ver bien otra vez. Ese fue el inicio de un camino lleno de incertidumbre y dolor.

<div>Desde ese día, Brian ha estado hospitalizado en el Hospital de Niños UCSF Benioff en Oakland. Actualmente está recibiendo su tercer ciclo de quimioterapia bajo el cuidado del oncólogo Dr. Michlitsch. A pesar del miedo y el cansancio, Brian no ha perdido la esperanza. Es un joven noble, amoroso y soñador. Le encanta caminar por la naturaleza, pasar tiempo con la familia y sueña con ser psicólogo algún día para ayudar a otros. Está enfocado en su recuperación y sueña con obtener su licencia de manejo y comenzar sus estudios universitarios en cuanto recupere su salud.

<div>Pero esta lucha también ha golpeado fuertemente a nuestra familia. Mi mamá tuvo que dejar de trabajar para cuidarlo tiempo completo, y mi papá está trabajando en tres empleos para poder cubrir la renta y los gastos del hogar. Aun así, encuentra tiempo para visitar a Brian y llevarle sus frutas favoritas al hospital, tratando de darle un poco de alegría en medio de tanto dolor.

<div>Como hermano mayor, trato de estar siempre presente y fuerte para él. Nuestro hermanito menor también está pasando por momentos muy difíciles tratando de entender todo esto.
