On Saturday, September 23, 2017 Brad was admitted to the emergency room at the  Geneva Medical Center for congestion and trouble breathing. What seemed to be a case of pneumonia soon led to the doctors discovering only 1/5th of Brad's lungs were giving his body the oxygen it needs. Doctors reacted by inserting a breathing tube into Brad's windpipe to allow the ventilator to oxygenate his body.

On Monday afternoon, Brad suddenly experienced complete respiratory failure, threatening his life. With no other options, Bradley was life flighted from Geneva Hospital to University Hospitals of Cleveland. Upon arrival, Brad underwent immediate surgery, placing Brad on a machine process known as ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). ECMO uses an artificial pump to withdraw blood from Brad's Femoral Artery, infuse it with oxygen from the machine, and delivere it back to his body. One can think of this as Dialysis for the lungs. All of this time, Brad has been in a medically induced coma to ensure every precaution can be taken.

Until Thursday, September 28th, Brad was 100% reliant on Ecmo and the ventilator, without it he would not be alive...
But as of Thursday evening, Brad's doctors decided to slowly build the strength of his lungs by dialing down the work his Ecmo machine is doing. From 100%, to 65% and 30%, Brad has now worked his way to being INDEPENDENT of the Ecmo machine, undergoing surgery to remove the tubes from his legs. This is great news, however, he is still dependent on his ventilator as of today. Steps such as these may be small, but all add up to getting Brad one step closer to full health.

Bradley is on the road to recovery, but is a long way from being back to his goofy, energetic, loving self. He is still in a medically induced coma until doctors feel he will be stable enough to slowly start to wake up and explain what a week he has had...

Please help us raise money to pay for Brad's medical expenses. Ecmo, life flights, a medically induced coma, and constant doctor supervision, all add up on an already devastated McGirr Family. ANY AMOUNT HELPS.
If you wish to donate anonymously, GoFundMe gives the option. Please SHARE THIS PAGE whether you donate or not!

Brad is the most loving, happy, energetic, funny, and incredibly caring person you could ever meet. This situation was so unexpected with Brad being the young and healthy man he is. One could only imagine the week the McGirr family has had, and continues to endure as Bradley starts the recovery process.
