Help [BOOM] Leeds survive the lockdown period.

Our local DIY venue Boom in Leeds needs our help right now. The COVID-19 global pandemic has forced them to voluntarily close to do their bit to help stop the spread of the virus. But also their gig calendar has been wiped out with cancelations for obvious reasons. We need this venue to exist at the end of this virus so please dig deep.

Boom released this statement...

Hi all,

Yesterday we told our staff about the current situation of BOOM. Today we need to tell you. Unfortunately BOOM Leeds will be closing its doors for live events with immediate effect until the end of April 2020. This is to help combat the spread of COVID-19 but also because the majority of bookings in our calendar have been understandably cancelled by bands, agents and promoters.

We’re not going to avoid the truth here, Boom is in the worst financial position it could be in because of this. We would please request ticket holders of affected shows where possible to keep them and wait for a new date to be announced for your affected ticket. We are in a very real situation where we are at an immediate risk of going bust. All ticket holders are being contacted via email.

Over the coming days we will be pushing creative and new ideas to help make sure there is a Boom venue for you to all enjoy when COVID-19 is over.

The government has currently not imposed any restrictions on running our business so some of you might ask why we have taken this decision. We all need to act now to help protect those most vulnerable in society. We do not support the UK Government’s response to the global pandemic. Social distancing and self isolation needs to be implemented right now.

Effectively we are signing our venue away by choosing to close voluntarily. We feel it's the right thing to do when the advice to the public is to avoid non-essential contact with others. It is a hard decision and it is definitely one that will put enormous pressure on the venue and staff.

We welcome the position of the Music Venue Trust that represents over 600 grassroots music venues, they are calling for forced venue closures and direct government support to the industry. There has been £120 million budgeted to host a ‘Festival of Britain 2022’ - this needs to be cancelled. The Government needs to reallocate the £120 million to create a Cultural Infrastructure Hardship Relief Fund, delivering funding to grassroots music venues, theatres, arts centres and other social and cultural spaces forced to close by the Coronavirus.

If you also support the Music Venue Trust & Music Venue Alliance you can sign the petition here: http://bit.ly/2wYFZnH

We know we are not the only ones affected by COVID-19, we understand and sympathize with everyone. Our hearts go out to all those that are sick but also the families who are dealing with loved ones passing away.

Please be kind and stay safe.

Boom Leeds.
