I am reaching out on behalf of a remarkable gentleman I recently met under heartbreaking circumstances: Robert McVey, a 1960 Olympic gold medalist in hockey and a graduate of Harvard University, where he played left wing during his collegiate years. About a month ago, I encountered Bob walking alone in extreme heat. He appeared disoriented and physically frail, so I stopped to assist him. When I introduced myself and offered help, he humbly responded, “I can’t afford you.” Through continued contact, I confirmed his identity and extraordinary legacy.

 Tragically, I also learned that Bob has been a victim of elder abuse, and his current living conditions are unsafe. He suffers from five fractured vertebrae, is at high risk for falls, and cannot safely use his bathroom to shower. Beyond necessary bathroom renovations and mobility supports, Bob’s home requires several updates to make it safe and livable as he desires to age in place: ADA-compliant bathroom modifications, grab bars and fall-prevention supports, essential kitchen appliances (refrigerator and stove), and new carpeting or safe flooring to reduce fall risk. The current flooring situation presents additional hazards, and proper carpeting or secure flooring installation would significantly reduce his fall risk and improve overall safety.

 I have donated a recliner and volunteer my services one day per week, including meal support and wellness checks. Bob is humble and deeply values his independence. I respectfully ask members of our broader community to consider assisting—whether through financial contributions, renovation services, appliance donations, carpeting installation, or increased public awareness. Bob once represented our country and brought home Olympic gold. Now, he needs us to stand behind him.
