Help My Mother Fight Cancer

Bernadette (Berny) is a young and vibrant 57 year old woman who has been battling breast cancer for two and a half years now. She is also my beloved mum. It saddens me deeply to share this story, but what started as localized breast cancer two and half years ago has now spread (metastasized) deep into her internal organs—liver, lungs, abdomen, and now, into her bones. With fluid build up in her lungs (due to cancer), the simple act of breathing has become difficult; continuing bone deterioration (osteoporosis) had also led to several fractures—multiple ribs, spine and left shoulder, disabling her to the point where she needs 24/7 full-time assistance with normal daily activities such as walking, getting in and out of the bed, bathroom use, etc.
My mother had a mastectomy combined with alternative therapy modalities to fight back against breast cancer; unfortunately this is not fully covered by Australia’s medical system. Her current disability has prompted me (her 21-year-old daughter) to make the decision of scaling back from working two jobs while attending graduate level courses at University so that I can be by her side, taking care of her. Hospice care at the hospital is currently not an option for us because she is deemed “not sick enough” and not old enough by the medical authorities. She literally has to be almost deceased and non-functional before they will take her in.
Your donations will go towards paying the mounting medical treatment expenses and continuing expenses of rent, food, utilities, etc. Ultimately, my two younger brothers and I would like to be able to pay for a caregiver to assist our mother while I am at work or at school, and to provide respite care for my mother's sister who has been helping us take care of her 24/7.
