Help Benito Isaac's Harvard Education

Hi, my name is Elizabeth Campa and I am currently the Director of the University of Global Health Equity-Haiti. Throughout my 20+ year career working in the global south, I have come across a few individuals whom I have mentored and that have inspired me. Benito Isaac is one of these persons.

Benito Isaac is a fighter. Born in rural Haiti, Benito aspired to be a guiding light for his family breaking the cycle of poverty.  He has an amazing ability to see the big picture and always seems to be able to focus on cultivating productive, collaborative relationships.

Benito was accepted to the Masters of Medical Sciences and Social Medicine Program (MMSc) at Harvard Medical School in January 2020.  Since then, we have researched numerous funding sources to support the two year program at HMS. The COVID-19 crisis has halted many opportunities. His dream is to study at one of the finest educational institutions in the world and I will do everything in my power to help him, including supporting his housing and travel while studying in Boston.

I have known Benito since 2012 when he first applied for a position to work with me in Haiti. I know that his life and work experiences in Haiti will make him a prized student at Harvard University because he has been functioning at the higher echelons of a well-funded and respected global health delivery program for years. Benito is fluent in Haitian Creole, French and English.

He has risen through the ranks and functions as the right-hand person of the Director of Program Management and a student of research to the Director of Research at  a highly respected organization in Haiti. Benito helps to steer programs and coordinate its
activities with the Haitian Ministry of Health, USAID, UNICEF and other major funders.

He is successful because everyone knows that he is brilliant, loyal and knows how to get things done. He has boundless energy, impeccable ethics and driven to develop partnerships that will improve the lives of Haitians throughout the country.

Benito currently holds the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in Applied Quantitative Economics (Specialty: Statistics) from the Centre De Techniques De Planification Et d’Economie Appliquée (CTPEA) in Haiti. He has also successfully completed the Global Health Delivery Intensive Summer program in 2019 at Through the same program that has accepted him for the MMSc.

My introduction to Benito came when our lives intersected in the arena of post-earthquake development work.  Benito began working on monitoring and evaluation of two projects, one in water and sanitation and the other in cervical cancer prevention.  He took his role seriously and continued to gain knowledge and enthusiasm to learn more in very different fields. Over the last eight years, he has also worked closely with the non-communicable disease team leading data collection in cardiovascular disease in rural Haiti including the study listed below and several more:

Yan, Lily & Pierre-Louis, Dufens & Isaac, Benito & Jean-Baptiste, Waking & Vertilus, Serge & Fenelon, Darius & Hirschhorn, Lisa & Hibberd, Patricia & Benjamin, Emelia & Bukhman, Gene & Kwan, Gene. (2020). Does distance from a clinic and poverty impact visit adherence for noncommunicable diseases? A retrospective cohort study using electronic medical records in rural Haiti. BMC Public Health. 20. 1545. 10.1186/s12889-020-09652-y.

He has also developed numerous protocols for studies and is now a project manager for the largest foundation grant.

I know that he treasures the education that Harvard has provided in the past and that being accepted into this program means a lot to him. From my perspective, he is in the top 1% of the candidates in this program.

Benito Isaac is the future of global health delivery and the future of Haiti.
