I met Ben and Breanna our freshman year of high school. Although they had just met, these two seemed like two peas in a pod. They were both outgoing, big-hearted individuals, with contagious laughs and a mutual love for boba. I’ve watched these two grow into such intelligent and caring people, both active in their communities (dance, church, Filipinx organizations, you name it!) and tirelessly working to help said communities.
This fall, they’ve begun their college journeys, still active in their communities and spreading their contagious laughter. Ben is a freshman at De Anza College pursuing Communications, and Breanna is a freshman at San Francisco State University pursuing Kinesiology.
We all know how difficult it is to be a student in this day and age, with the expense of rising tuitions and the weight of piling responsibilities. Ben and Breanna both have worked part-time, on top of being active in several communities, on TOP of being full time students with good academic standing.
Last Saturday night, a handful of our friends found time outside of school and work to reconnect and celebrate “adulting” over dinner. That evening, it felt like we were kids again and life seemed less daunting.
But sometimes, bad things happen to good people.
Upon returning to the De Anza Hotel parking lot, we were devastated to see that it was broken into. To make matters worse, the thieves had also stolen all of Ben and Breanna’s school supplies, among which were their laptops, textbooks, and all other important belongings they would need for school.
After calling the police several times, we were extremely disheartened by the dispatcher’s lack of empathy and help. Distressed and in shock, we asked them for help and advice, only to be met with rude, agitated responses of “File an online report”. A group of eighteen year olds with their first experience of a break-in, in the middle of the night, with no assistance from the police meant to help them.
Now, without access to technology or needed coursework materials, Ben and Breanna have been left in a difficult position for the school year, financially and academically. As their friend, it breaks my heart to see this happen to them at such an important time in their lives. They’ve worked so hard and so tirelessly to get to where they are today. They are outstanding individuals who do not deserve what happened to them, and do not deserve to be setback by this. I know Ben and Breanna are strong and smart people, but they will need all the help they can receive to get back on track.
Without any help from the police or property manager, they must turn to friends, family, and the community for kindness. If you know them personally, or if you can understand the severity of their situation, please consider donating to help them pay for the car damages and to buy new school supplies.
