"It's terminal".... We'll never forget how hearing those words from our Oncologist felt, and how they reverberated inside our heads, and in our conversations with each other for weeks. What was a sharp abdominal pain, after several tests/scans/biopsies has been found to be something far more sinister.
Becky Mishtawy has been a fighter and is now facing her 3rd round with cancer. Her breast cancer has returned and spread to her liver, her spine, her right hip, and her right lung. Seeing these results has been more than shocking to us, and how can breast cancer show up in your liver? This is the truly frightening part of Metastatic Breast Cancer.
There is no cure for this, while there are some promising treatments that will extend her life beyond the 3-5 months we were given (if we had chosen to NOT pursue any treatment). There is some promise to a particular treatment regimen and our goal is to make Becky the statistical outlier in a positive way. Some patients have continued for a few years.
Becky is undergoing the CLEOPATRA treatment, as her returned cancer is now HER2+. This means she has 6 rounds of hardcore chemo (taxotere) plus 2 other drugs. Every 3 weeks we have to get the drugs via IV infusions. She has already completed 2 rounds. The 2 other drugs will continue on every three weeks for rest of her life.
Inevitably our friends ask..... "What can I do to help?". Normally we shy away from requests, but this time we ask for your help this way, only should you want to contribute. One way or another we'll get through it but we wanted to give everyone an option to help, even if it's enough for Becky's favorite caramel macchiato. This fund will assist Becky and I in covering large, sometimes unexpected, bills that come in or with expenses that might otherwise not be an option. For example, for our 8 year wedding anniversary this year we spent together getting a chemotherapy port installed in her chest, and just received a surprise bill for almost $1K.
Contributing here will let us cover these unexpected medical and care expenses as they arrive and reduce the amount of stress in our lives. Ideally it will allow us to spend as much of her time time together as possible.
Thanks whether you contribute or not. We love you all!
