A very close friend of mine has been losing her vision since July 2018. Her name is rebecca, she is a loving mother of two boys and a loving wife.
After months of seeing several doctors with her condition worsening, she finally has a diagnoses and unfortunately it's not good. She has been diagnosed with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). Blurring and clouding of vision are usually the first symptoms of Leber. These vision problems may begin in one eye or simultaneously in both eyes; if vision loss starts in one eye, the other eye is usually affected within several weeks or months. Over time, vision in both eyes worsens with a severe loss of sharpness (visual acuity) and color vision. This condition mainly affects central vision, which is needed for detailed tasks such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces. Vision loss results from the death of cells in the nerve that relays visual information from the eyes to the brain (the optic nerve). Eventually vision loss is profound and permanent.
She has done so much research and has finally been referred to a clinical trial in Taiwan (which is in phase 3 so they are getting results) . Unfortunately she has had to close her business as she can no longer see and her husband has had to take time off work and will continue to do so.
She will need to make several trips to Taiwan to receive her treatment, with the first one being on the 1st January 2019. I understand its Christmas and budgets are tight, but so is hers and she now has the added stress of paying for flights, accommodation, passports etc to receive her treatment as well as she still needs to pay mortgage, bills etc here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and we will be holding fundraisers to help assist.
