Help Battle come home, please!

Last November 2017, my son found himself at a rescue shelter amongst hundreds of orphaned puppies who were just hoping someone would show them the affection they all desperately needed. Alone in a cage, way up high, was a rambunctious overgrown, four-month old pup who was vigorously trying to capture the attention from anyone he possibly could. My son lifted up his eyes and gazed at what he describes as love at first sight. A lightning bolt of emotion down to his chore is how he knew that this dog was meant to be by his side. We found out that this little guy was previously adopted by a family and after only 4 weeks they brought him back to the adoption center. He was once again unwanted and discarded. This broke our hearts. We knew we had to make up for all of his heartache and show him the unconditional love he deserved.
Here we are, almost 8 months later, and the connection between my son and his dog has grown even deeper. He has since named his new puppy, Battle. My son was a tanker in the Iraq war. When they would go on a mission, they would call each other “Battle Buddies”. It has been a long emotional recovery for my son since he has returned home from Iraq. As a War Veteran he may never be the same, but since my son and Battle were united the world was right again.
Today Battle spotted in the distance, a female deer grazing in our front yard. Everything happened so fast as Battle took off without hesitation at lightning speed after the family of deer. Before we knew it, he was two houses down where the female deer sped to gather the rest of her heard. Now, for about ten deer and Battle barking behind them, the chase continued. We made every effort to get him back home and we were close to grabbing him when he dodged us and made a break for my son across the street when he was struck by an oncoming SUV.
Battle’s injuries consist of multiple torn ligaments, ripped out muscles, ripped off skin from the top of his leg to the bottom of his ankle, torn veins and/or possibly his artery. He will need multiple bandage changes a day for the next 4-6 weeks, antibiotics, pain management, overnight hospitalizations, doctor’s visits, consults and eventually surgeries to correct all his injuries, plus skin graphing in order to save his leg.
The initial cost of Battle being treated and admitted to the hospital was just under $5,000.00. We do not yet know the total cost for everything but we estimated about $20,000.00. We only qualified for $2,000.00 of care credit between us. Any unused funds will be donated to North Shore Animal League, where we adopted our little Battle.
About two months ago my son was in an accident. He is currently recovering from surgery of his own and has been on disability for a few months now. He is in debt due to not getting paid, and he will not be able to go back to work for months. He is limited in the things he can do and money is tight.
Having the love from our little Battle buddy has filled our hearts and our home with such joy. We just want him to get better and come home again. Those that have had their hearts touched by a dog know the deep seeded bond and love that only a canine can bring into the world. Battle is an angel to all of us. Through dogs like Battle, we experience love in its purest form, unconditional and undeniable.
As we left Battle tonight at the hospital, he saw my son and started to cry. Battle had to be sedated because of his emotional anguish of their separation. He loves my son and his family so much.
Please find it in your hearts to help Battle be well again, and come home to my son.
