Barry Schofield's Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery

Donation protected
On Wednesday, February 26th, my father had a bad fall from a roof while working on a client's home. Since that day, he has been in the ICU at Gwinnett Medical Center outside of Atlanta, with significant injuries to his leg, and more imperatively, his brain.  While we still don't quite know the extent of these injuries or the probability / extent of his recovery, we do know he will continue to be in hospital care for the foreseeable future.

A brilliant carpenter, amazing husband to my mother, Karen, and father to myself and two sisters. An all-around active superstar, and a friend to anyone in need, my dad has spent the majority of his time and energy throughout his 67+ years on this earth in servitude of others. Always the one to offer to cook up a last minute feast for five, walk through the planogram of Home Depot via the phone 3,000 miles away, or say just the right thing to make you laugh when you need it most.

Seeing him in a hospital bed, unable to talk, understand, or move is devastating and unsettling all at once. Always on the go, always coming up with a funny joke, if he were awake right now, I like to think my Dad would be extremely annoyed to have been in bed for almost two weeks, and likely devising a plan to order ice cream and lobster via room service.

We've learned a lot about brain injuries over the past 6 days, and while we are forcing ourselves to maintain optimism, the reality is, the outcome is very unknown. The neurological doctors were able to clear him for surgery on his leg injury, and the operation went well. And now, we wait. We wait for a signal of consciousness and responsiveness, and we wait for the doctors to tell us he's showing any signs of improvement.

Many of you have reached out to my mother, Karen, and to myself and my sisters offering positive energy, prayers, and asking how you can help. As the sole entrepreneur of his contracting / construction business, and the unlikeliness that my Dad will ever be able to work in this capacity again, I've setup this GoFundMe to assist my mother and our family in offsetting the massive medical expenses, and helping to keep their household running smoothly in his absence.

Thank you for your support, your words of encouragement, and the kindness so many of you have shown over the last week. Please contact me directly if I can provide additional details or if you're in the Atlanta area and want to come by. I will continue to provide updates through this page.

Staying hopeful, as my Dad is a fighter and the strongest guy I know.
