On June 22nd everything changed. We received a call saying our mom had a seizure and was in the hospital. Upon arriving we found her in a terrifying non verbal state. She couldn’t speak for more than 24 hours, only communicating through nods and blinking.
It wasn’t long until results started coming in, each more terrifying. There was spots on her bones, lung and brain. It’s cancer. A lot of cancer.
Two weeks pass, full of waiting and wondering while mom laid in the hospital. After a lot of home preparation, safety bars, walkers etc. we brought her home on July 7th. This morning was our first GP appointment who informed us this is incurable. He said after the biopsy we MIGHT have an opportunity for radiation/chemotherapy but it won’t be a cure, it may just slow it down. This isn’t where we give up. It is where we fight. Harder than ever. This is where we look for as many healing alternatives as we can, which is exactly what we are trying to do. The only problem, these approaches aren’t covered by medical.
We have already started and have been pouring ourselves physically, mentally and financially into giving mom a fighting chance to see her grandchildren grow. She requires 24 hour care due to the risk of repeat seizures and is unable to drive or work. Faced with what we are, we are doing something we have never done before and asking for help. It’s not an easy thing to do but we recognize we need every bit of aide we can get right now.
Not only does mom want to beat this, she wants to start a foundation to help other people faced with a similar situation. She’s always been strong, but in this moment she is demonstrating more determination and fight than anyone I have ever met and we feel compelled reciprocate with the same.
