Help Avery Read Again

Donation protected
Hello, friends, family, and generous strangers.

Please help my dream come true. I want to be able to read again.

My name is Avery Baggett. I am originally from Georgia, with a pitstop in Philadelphia (courtesy of the University of Pennsylvania!), and Lexington, KY, where I am currently pursuing my post-graduate studies in Linguistics.

About six years ago, I suffered a traumatic brain injury that caused, among many things that I won’t get into here, loss of vision. It’s been a tough few years, but I’ve been blessed with tremendous support and love from my family and friends. I’ve made significant progress in the reconfiguring of my life as a person living with low vision.

Since I entered college in 2008, I’ve had the dream to become a professor. I am passionate about teaching and research. I know I have the mind to achieve my goal but my physical limitations make that dream seem impossible.

While there is a lot that assistive technologies can do for me, there is still a wide gap between what those technologies can do and the materials they can handle effectively. Unfortunately, most texts are not in a format that can be easily read by a computer. Especially in my field of linguistics, which is rife with unusual characters, charts, and graphs that are beyond the grasp of today's screen readers. Often I have to rely on the eyes of others to explain the graphical and textual elements of inaccessible works, thus impairing my productivity and sense of independence.

After countless hours of research and consultation with my doctors, I found what I believe is the best opportunity to regain my vision and ability to read….maybe even one day be completely independent again! Stem Cell Therapy offers a regenerative treatment for my blindness as well as healing of the neurological damage suffered.

Stem Cell options in the United States are limited by extraordinary costs. American insurers DO NOT cover stem cell therapy. In Europe and Mexico, such therapy is much more widespread and safe. In Mexico, two clinics specialize in the kind of therapy that would be most beneficial to me. The treatment involves intravenous and spinal cord injections of more than 1,500,000 perinatal stem cells, sourced from willing donations of umbilical cord cells, amniotic fluid, and Whorton's jelly.

The cost of the treatment itself is $16,000. In the United States, the cost would be $50,000 and the injection would provide only 1/10th the number of equivalent stem cells. My GOAL is for these cells to reproduce and repair the neurological cells damaged by my injury. My HOPE is that this treatment will help me regain some/all of my vision.

Thank you for reading this! Even if you can’t give, I appreciate any good thoughts and wishes you have! Please consider forwarding this to people in your social media circles. Everything helps!

While I’m proud to be a member of the blind community now. If there is a way out, I would gladly take it. More than anything, I just miss reading. Maybe this will help me get there again.

Thank you!
