Dear Friends,

I work in the Program Office of a Master of Science (in English) at University of Rome Tor Vergata. In the past two years I've met some fantastic people (colleagues and students), but I have to say that I've come across some incredible students, many who have fascinating, and sometimes very difficult, stories.

This brings me to Yonas. I'd like to share the story he wrote to share here:

I was born on the 1st of February, 1987 in Adi Mosa, Eritrea and I went to Ethiopia 1997 after my mother had died. While I was living with my aunt in Addis Ababa, the Ethio-Eritrea war broke out and I couldn’t go back to my country on account of the indefinite compulsory military imposed on every Eritrean. So since Eritreans do not have any prospect as refugees in Ethiopia, I decided to come to Europe through the Sahara desert. First I crossed the Sudanese border and went to Khartoum. I stayed in Khartoum for a couple of days there and started the arduous journey to Libya. As soon as I arrived in Tripoli I was arrested by the police because the human trafficker to whom we paid lots of money to take us to the coast fell out with police. Hence I spent the next four months in prison but I managed to get out of the prison and through God’s grace manage to get on a rubber dinghy. Luckily we were rescued by Italian Coast Guard ships and we managed to escaped with our lives.

If I manage to complete  my degree, through God’s grace, I'll have a higher chance of landing a good research job in academia or policy – promising areas for social impact – in the short-run.
In the long-run I hope to go back to my country and help my people with all the broad set of tools for understanding how the social world works.

Yonas is now living at a parish outside of Rome, thanks to Caritas, a Catholic charity association and waiting for asylum status.

He has completed the first year of his Master of Science with flying colors, much better than many students who face no particular difficulties. We've helped him during this past year in overcoming some very important hurdles, but he is shortly going to face one which I think (hope) that you'll be able to help with.

In order to complete his exams and earn his degree, he'll have a total of €956 in university fees this next year, which he honestly is not able to pay. (I've set the goal of this campaign at €1000, in order to cover expenses.)

I strongly believe in this young man's strength, intelligence and desire to move forward in his life. I'm doing everything to help him, but would like to ask if you, too, would be willing to make an even very small donation towards his future. I would be forever grateful, and very obviously, so would Yonas.

Thank you, Susie

Cari amici,

Grazie, Susie
