Art’s rehabilitation & recovery fund

On Tuesday, April 27 6:15 a.m. Art Yerian went into sudden cardiac arrest after suffering congestive heart failure. Art coded for five minutes and was brought back to life by the amazing ER doctor and the Key Biscayne Fire Department crew who brought him to the hospital. That was the first of many miracles. Art spent a month in ICU at Mercy Hospital where he continued to make great strides in his recovery-showing what a true fighter and survivor he really is. The Hospital staff at Mercy Hospital took such good care of Art, taking him from a critical position to a stable one. Art has now been transferred to a long-term acute hospital where he is currently out of ICU and stable. Art has been cleared of any serious heart problems but now has to recover from a neurological stand point as his brain was without oxygen for five minutes. Another miracle, his MRI came out normal, no brain damage. Doctors have told the family that the process of coming out of a minimally conscious state takes around three months for the brain to recuperate and rest after such a serious trauma but Art continues to amaze all around him by following commands and having long periods of wakefulness. Art will be receiving aggressive therapy Monday through Friday and is currently being weaned off a trach while breathing on his own.

Art is a valued member of our community as the Manager at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and Chair of the Key Biscayne Chamber of Commerce.  Art is a husband to his beautiful wife Liz for 30 yrs. He is a father to 3 wonderful children, a brother and is an Uncle to his adoring his nieces and nephews.  Anyone who knows Art knows his love for family, friends, community, and wildlife/animals. He’s a man of high moral character who truly cares about others. The ultimate goal is to have Art recuperating at home with his beloved family and animals, especially Maverick his golden lab and Momo the squirrel he rescued from the brink of death who comes visit every day looking for some nuts before going back to the wilderness called Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.

On a personal note I would like to add that,  Art is truly the most kind human I have ever met. He treats my children as his own and they can't wait to be with Uncle Art again and drink mango juice on the beach. We were supposed to see him right as Covid happened and this is just another reason why I hate Covid.

Art's loving wife and family are devoting all of their energy and time to focus on his recuperation. Any help that you can provide for his increasing medical bills and his extensive rehab would be truly appreciated. Please keep him and his family in your prayers and thoughts. If you know Art, you know that he is a fighter, and will prevail through this tragic event. Please help spread the word through your loved ones, networks and social media.
