Help Archer beat Leukemia

We love Archie -- thanks for visiting this page to learn more about this special boy and some of the help he and his family need right now.

Earlier this year, Archie turned 3 years old and celebrated with a small group of family and friends. Even in the midst of the pandemic, there was laughter and joy in the air as the kids chased star-shaped balloons in their East Williamsburg shared backyard. Three weeks later, spring came after a long, cold winter in New York City. Archie’s parents, Tennie and Pawel, took him to the playground, but Archie said he was feeling cold, despite the unusually warm 70-degree weather that day. The following week, it started to take him longer to walk to and from school where he complained of leg pain. He also became more dissonant at school, where he didn't want to participate in physical activities with his peers. After learning of this from daycare teachers, Archer's parents knew that something was wrong and brought him to the doctor for a check-up and bloodwork. While waiting for the full lab results, some alarming findings suggested Archie’s life might be in danger, and that morning doctors contacted Archer's parents letting them know he must be brought to the ER immediately. Once at the hospital, he was quickly diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia ETV6-RUNX1, which was caught in a favorable timeframe.

Archie’s treatment started almost immediately, and he had his mediport surgery, biopsy of bone marrow, and a lumbar spinal puncture three days after he was admitted to the hospital. His day-to-day routine of attending preschool with friends has been abruptly halted for at  least the next six months. Now Archer is out of the hospital and his days at home consist mostly of resting, at home chemotherapy, and going to  chemotherapy clinic visits twice a week. He is immunocompromised due to medication, and isolation is setting in after three weeks. His treatment is still being planned as more biopsies must be performed, but the doctors anticipate that he will have to go through six months of outpatient chemotherapy chemotherapy twice a week, and blood transfusions as needed in conjunction with at-home orally administered chemotherapy medication. He was unable to walk since his admission at the hospital in response to the advancement of his illness, as well as the response to the medication. Now he has begun to walk again with some minor assistance, which is a huge improvement. He refuses to accept help and he is fighting.

Archie’s mother, Tennie, and father, Pawel are separated, and neither has family near by. All of Tennie’s extended family is in Taiwan and they feel helpless, particularly with travel restrictions still in place due to the pandemic. Tennie is faced with splitting her time taking care of Archie and trying to maintain her job and health insurance benefits. Pawel's family, who lives out of the state, is providing all the support they can from a distance and in person, while trying to maintain their lives and jobs. Pawel is also helping to take care of his son as much as possible while trying to keep his job in order to maintain income for his family's stability.  This will be a long, challenging road. The level of uncertainty in their lives is huge even with currently promising bloodwork results. They can’t do it alone, so we are asking our Brooklyn community for help to support this wonderful family and their son on their journey to his recovery.

The generous donations will help with all the potential expected upcoming costs involved with care for a child with major medical needs, and this will allow Tennie and Pawel to give more of their attention and care to Archie throughout the time of his treatment, while reducing the stress of financial hardship. Tennie and Pawel are humbled by the outpouring of love from family, friends, and the amazing Williamsburg/Greenpoint community. Any support for Archie will be graciously welcomed and we thank you in advance for your kindness.

We can’t wait to see Archie and his friends chasing even more balloons on his next birthday.
