Help Anne Beat Multiple Myeloma

Donation protected
Background:

Anne Boots was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in January of 2015. While she achieved remission/partial remission and remained on maintenance therapy up until recently, she ran into a bit of a snag with her treatment in November of 2017.

Anne's disease was progressing and the therapies the doctors were trying were not working. Luckily, Anne is able to go to Emory for treatment and was told she was a candiate for a CAR-T Cell Therapy clinical trial there. This type of therapy uses the patient's own white blood cells which are genetically modified to fight the person's particular disease. Once the cells are modified and multiplied, they are infused back into the patient to start fighting the cancer cells.

Everything was moving forward until an MRI in early December showed a 10cm mass on Anne's pancreas. She would undergo 10 treatments of radiation and then move forward with preparation for the clinical trial. Howev er, Anne was hospitalized in Columbia due to complications from radiation following her final radiation treatment on 12/22. While Anne was in the hospital in Columbia, it was determined that the mass on her pancreas had not responded to the radiation.

Anne was transferred to Emory Hospital on 12/30 so her doctor there could determine alternative treatment to treat the pacreatic mass prior to the CAR-T Cell clinical trial.

While no one can ever plan for cancer, this type of intense therapy was not exaclty planned prior the participation in the trial.

Associated Cost:
Anne is required to stay in Atlanta to undergo two cycles of intensive chemotherapy. While she is not in the hospital receiving treatment, she has arranged to stay within 15 minutes of the hospital, as required. For now, this has added up to about two months for an Airbnb rental (this may increase depending on requirements for  the clinical trial following recovery from the second cycle of chemo).

Anne is required to have a caregiver stay with her in Atlanta during this time, and family members are alternating taking time from work to stay in Atlanta to ensure she is taken care of.

Unanticipated medical costs associated with the two rounds of chemotherapy will also be incurred. Anne is also unable to work during these treatments and has had to take medical leave to focus on recovery.

Any amount will assist Anne on her way to recovery and ease the burden of financial stress she and her family are feeling at this time. All help will be greatly appreciated!
