New Building for Helping Hands!

Tax deductible
You may not realize that your neighbor or your son or daughter’s classmate is in need of help.  The one place they’ve always turned to within our community has been Helping Hands.  Helping Hands has consistently relied on the support of people like you, here within the Riverdale School District.

The grandmother who was able to give her daughter’s children a proper Christmas after their mom passed away.  The fifty-year-old who received a lift chair, hospital bed, and smaller clothes as she succumbed to Stage IV stomach cancer.  The young mother, who was the victim of abuse, starting over with nothing for her two children after leaving a shelter; she received beds, furniture, household items, clothes, sheets, towels, and most importantly—self-esteem.  The neighbor down the street who lost everything in a house fire and needed immediate supplies.  All of these friends were helped by donations to Helping Hands and the need continues today.  Requests are still being asked and our organization has to say, “sorry, we can’t help.”

The future direction of the Helping Hands organization is to provide a service for local community members with low-cost or free household goods, clothing, and school supplies in a spirit of grace, dignity, and compassion.  It is local ministry in action.  The main difference between this organization and a store like Goodwill, is that the help available doesn’t just exist during store hours.  Emergency help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  And it is utilized.

The mission store is a part of the overall organization, but without it, Helping Hands cannot exist.  The store serves as a way to raise funds for outreach activities that Riverdale School District families have come to rely on—school supplies, Thanksgiving food baskets, Christmas gifts, and after-school programs.

The new 4,400 square-foot building (located on part of the First United Methodist Church of Port Byron property) will be able to house all items in an organized and aesthetically-pleasing manner.  Once the new building is constructed, it will have a governing board of church and community leaders to ensure the needs of the whole community are being met.   It truly is a community endeavor.

We’ve all needed a helping hand at one point or another.  Will you help be part of the community of helping hands?  If we all give something, we all win.  Today, we are asking for more than your used household goods.  We are asking you to make a financial investment in a long-term facility to house Helping Hands.  We are asking that you consider making an impact in the community through your financial benevolence.
