Please help us give the gift of hearing to Anima.
We are working closely with Ear Aid Nepal to raise funds to cover the costs of a life-changing operation for Anima, who lost hearing in both ears when she was 13 due to medical negligence. Regular hearing aids cannot help her. To hear again she needs surgery and a cochlear implant. This is a standard operation in the United States usually covered by health insurance. Because she lives in Nepal, though, Anima has no insurance and cannot cover the costs of the operation which averages well over US$ 50,000 per implant.
Anima’s Story
Anima Acharya was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, best known as the home of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. It is also one of the world's poorest countries.
She was raised in a loving family in Nepal. When she was 13 years old, she started to lose her hearing. Her family took her to the best doctors available, but the drug treatment they prescribed was incorrect. Within a week of taking the medicine she had lost all hearing in both her ears - and her world changed completely.
Despite this loss, Anima has remained a constant source of hope and inspiration to those around her.
She had the choice of attending a school for the deaf, but Anima chose instead to continue her studies in the regular public school system. She didn’t want her new disability to isolate her from her peers or to prevent her from enjoying all the opportunities that they have in life. Not only did she complete her studies, Anima was the top student in her high school class. She has also taught herself English and despite the daily challenges she faces, she recently completed an online UK degree in information technologies – again she was the highest achieving student in her class. Since completing her online degree, she has worked as a volunteer with humanitarian organizations in her home country and with the United Nations.
But without the ability to hear, her life opportunities remain limited. She cannot find employment in Nepal. Without a cochlear implant, she cannot become independent and live the life that she aspires to.
About the Operation:
We have consulted with Ear Aid Nepal, a UK-registered charity https://www.earaidnepal.org/ and doctors in Nepal and in the United States. Anima's condition was caused by an incorrect diagnosis and mis-prescribed dosage of ototoxic drugs when she was 13.
Anima requires a two-step surgery to correct her loss of hearing and the constant tinnitus she suffers. The first surgery is called a tympanoplasty. Three months after this, she will need to have cochlear implant surgery. For her to have implants in both ears, she will need two implant surgeries spaced six months apart. Several other medical procedures will be required. The GoFundMe goal of 20,000 USD will cover only some of the costs associated with this work.
To help us cover other pre- and post-surgery bills for mandatory tests, rehabilitation, and other hospital and medical fees, we are pleased to partner with Ear Aid Nepal. This charity also relies on funds from individual donors. Their goal is to support those with ear disease and hearing difficulties in Nepal and the Himalayan region, particularly through the Ear Centre at Green Pastures Hospital in Pokhara, Nepal. Ear Aid Nepal trains people and provides expert professional links to improve local services. They have many years of experience working in Nepal with the deaf and those with chronic ear disease. Ear Aid Nepal has kindly offered to match funds raised for Anima through this GoFundMe campaign. They are in regular touch with Anima and know she is an excellent candidate for this life-changing opportunity.

Anima dreams of continuing her higher education studies in the United States and helping the world to be a better place in which no children have to face the hardships that she has had to overcome.
And she loves to make others smile. She sings and dances for her family and friends - but she cannot hear her own voice or even the sound of applause and praise from those that love her the most.
Anima does not dwell on her own struggles. For her the most important thing in life is helping others.
