Help and support for Shirley Picard

Donation protected
Hello everyone.  Our mom Shirley Picard was on the trip of a lifetime to Tahiti to celebrate her 20th wedding anniversary to her beloved husband Andy.  While in Tahiti they renewed their wedding vows, but soon thereafter on 12/12/19 both were involved in a motor vehicle accident in which Shirley sustained a serious spinal cord injury, among other painful injuries including multiple fractured ribs.

Shirley's spinal injury was so severe she could not be med-flighted to the states, and she has currently no motion on her left side and limited motion on her right.  As of today (12/13/19), she has undergone emergency surgery to sustain the fractures in her C2 and C3 vertebrae and to contain the swelling, contusions, and bruising in her spinal column.  She had rods and pins placed to stabilize the injury and reduce swelling and is currently in the intensive care unit at a hospital on the main Tahitian Island, exceptionally far from family.  She is in a lot of pain, and the medical team in Tahiti is working to manage her pain and care.  At present, she will remain in Tahiti until stabilized and then will be med-flighted to the states to continue treatment and begin the extensive rehabilitation process that such an injury will require.

At this time we are asking for donations of support to assist with her immediate care needs including her husband's associated costs to remain in Tahiti, the costs associated with ongoing transportation of a medically fragile patient, and costs associated with all facets of the care that is likely to be required in the weeks and months ahead.  She may face additional surgery as time progresses.  We expect the costs to be quite substantial, and while insurance will cover many of her immediate medical needs, the spiraling costs associated with her care will be quite daunting.  We anticipate she and Andy will not be able to resume their professional roles for a considerable period of time.

My mom has worked as a nurse for 33 years, is a mother to four children, grandmother to seven, and beloved by many.  She has worked as an OB nurse, OB Assistant Nurse Manager, and OB Nurse Manager in many settings and has always dedicated every ounce of her boundless energy to helping mothers, their babies, and their families through the challenges and wonders of birth.  Anyone who has known my mom can tell you she is a dynamo and has undeniable charisma, energy, and passion for life and for her work.  She has helped so many and it is our chance to give back to her in her time of need.

I, her eldest daughter Nicole Haberman, will be managing these funds and will be ensuring that they are properly allocated to best help my mom and Andy while undergoing treatment and recovery in Tahiti, during transit back home to the states, and in the weeks and months ahead as we work to assist her in making a full recovery through extensive rehabilitation.
