Help Amir Start his New Life

Asylum seeker Amir Leaves Manus Island

Amir Taghinia left the Australian funded and run Manus Island detention centre the day Peter Dutton ordered electricity, water, food and medical care to be cut off.

Today he is in Canada, thanks to the generosity and support of ordinary citizens.

My name is Chelsea Taylor, I live in Melbourne and met Amir when I was working on Manus Island. Over 22 months, I worked with the Canadian Government to get Amir to safety. Amir is now living with my parents just outside Vancouver, Amir was able to go to Canada as part of their private sponsorship program.

To be successful a group of ordinary citizens in Canada have come together and agree to support people like Amir for their first 12 months in the country.

Amir starts his new life in Canada

Amir describes being in Canada as a 'miracle' but is still worried about his 'brothers' he has left behind on Manus Island.

"I still cannot believe that I am in Canada," said the 24-year-old Iranian refugee. "People are so welcoming ... they are so lovely, especially my sponsors."

In a few short weeks, Amir Taghinia has lived both extremes of humanity and fate, leaving the desperate conditions of an offshore Australian refugee camp and arriving in the comfortable Coquitlam home of Wayne and Linda Taylor.

Make no mistake, Amir and all on Manus, were sent and kept there by the Australian Government. Prime Minister Turnbull and Immigration Minister Dutton have plenty of options to resettle Australia's refugees held offshore in New Zealand, in the USA - and clearly now in Canada.

Can you provide some support to Amir?

Can you help Amir use his knowledge of Manus Island and the refugees and people seeking asylum held there, to get access to food and clean water?

Amir's case sets a precedent. He was held for more than four years by the Australian Government - held in a prison without hope.

You can help Amir establish his new life in Canada -and other asylum seekers who remain on Manus Island, in PNG.
