Help Amaya and Pete with expenses from accident!

Donation protected
As many of you have heard by now, Amaya and her husband, Pete Garza, were in a very serious car accident on Tuesday, May 4th. They were driving back to Albuquerque after visiting friends in Tucson. Unfortunately, at a high rate of speed, they blew a tire and their vehicle violently swerved off the highway, rolling several times before coming to a stop.

Both Amaya and Pete were eventually airlifted to a hospital back in Tucson with life threatening injuries. Amaya was rushed into surgery for a perforated bowel. The initial prognosis was that she would have several inches of her colon removed and may need a colostomy bag.

Gratefully, the doctors did not need to remove as much of her colon as earlier suspected and no colostomy was needed. After surgery, she was admitted to the trauma unit to recover from her abdominal surgery and the accident.

Petey, as Amaya affectionately calls him,  also has serious injuries. He has broken ribs and several fractured vertebrae. He was admitted to the ICU while they stabilized his neck and back, and monitor his injuries. We are so grateful that he can move his legs, feet and toes, and we are praying for a full recovery.

Some of their family members traveled to be with them to surround them with love and support, along with their dear friends in Tucson. They are both still in the hospital,  gaining strength,  having their significant pain managed, and healing every day. As you can imagine, they are weak, managing tremendous pain, and are emotionally & physically drained. The good news is that after 4 days since the accident, they are both alert, able to have conversation, and have started eating.

On Sunday, May 9th, Amaya and Pete were able to have an emotional reunion and see each other for the first time since the accident. Can you imagine?

They both have a long road to recovery, which will include rehab and physical therapy for both of them. At some point, they will be transported home to Albuquerque to continue their recovery, but they are waiting for their doctors and care team to determine the appropriate level of healing that will allow them to travel safely.

They have been deeply touched and overwhelmed by the outpouring of care and concern from so many people. They have such a large community of people who love them so much. With this type of love and support, they are destined to a strong recovery.

Many have asked how they can help. We have put together this GoFundMe account for those who want to assist in relieving any financial burden they may have as they funnel through the myriad of medical bills and other expenses related to these injuries that their insurance might not cover.

If you know Amaya and Pete, you know they generously and eagerly help others. This is our chance to help them. We will post updates as to their recovery here so we can all continue to send prayers, light candles, meditate, send good vibes and good juju for their recovery.

Cannot thank you all enough for your love and support!
