Two days later, she was diagnosed with a very rare cancer, Stage IV Melanoma. The Melanoma had no malignant skin primary, which is how it went undetected until Amanda was already Stage IV. Luckily, Amanda found a lump herself, which prompted this whole journey.


Amanda's oncology first opinion referred her to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa due to the nature and severity of her case. At Moffitt, Amanda immediately began immunotherapy, which reduced many of the tumors, but it also left her with Type I Diabetes, so she is now permanently insulin-dependent.


Recently, the doctors realized that the initial therapy treatment was no longer working as intended, so they started a second, more aggressive, immunotherapy. This therapy gave her immune-mediated meningitis, which required a 5-day hospital stay.


Now, Amanda is recovering from meningitis while her Moffitt care team decides on another treatment plan. Every week/month seems to bring a new trial and a rollercoaster of successes and setbacks.


Needless to say, this journey over the last year has been challenging for Amanda, Rick (her husband), and Aislin (their 14-year-old daughter). The constant trips to Tampa and hotel stays have been disruptive and costly. Amanda now has to regularly see an endocrinologist, eye doctor, neurologist, dermatologist, and Obgyn to monitor for treatment-related side effects. As you can imagine, the medical costs are very high, and Amanda has not been able to work since her diagnosis. I'm hoping this fundraiser can help alleviate some of the debts they have incurred over this last year while trying to beat this cancer and help mitigate the ongoing costs that have no end in sight. Amanda, Rick, and Aislin are wonderful people and not the type to ask for help, so I am asking for them.
