This is my best friend Alicia. She is loyal, loving, intelligent, hardworking, hilarious, strong, talented, and a wonderful mother to her four year old autistic son, Bob.
She is also trapped in an abusive living situation.
Alicia is still living with her abuser, her ex. Although they are legally separated, Alicia has remained in the former family home while gathering the financial resources to support herself and Bob. During the course of their separation, the abuser has physically, sexually, and emotionally assaulted Alicia. She has also displayed violent outbursts of temper in front of Bob on many occasions. Despite these behaviors, the abuser has done everything in her power to convince Alicia that *she* is controlling, abusive, manipulative, and a danger to their son.
Although Alicia handles the bulk of her son's care when he is not at pre-school (while also working outside the home), her abuser constantly claims that Alicia is a neglectful parent. On one occasion, this included a call to the police out of "concern" for their son's well-being while he was in Alicia's care.
All Alicia wants is to be free of her abuser while preserving the educational and health services she has obtained for her son. This has been difficult, as she has no reliable childcare options besides herself. It has taken her nearly a year to find a safe way out. Now she has finally fond a potential new home, and she's very excited for this new start for her and Bob.
There's only one problem. Her ex has withdrawn her promise to pay for childcare for Bob. Without it, Alicia cannot work and cannot afford to leave. Faced with the prospect of a legal battle, Alicia has filed a Protection From Abuse order. I am terrified of what will happen when the abuser finds out she has taken legal action. Alicia is, too. Above all, she wants to protect her son.
