<div>On December 1st 2025 — just one day after celebrating her father’s birthday — Aleena suddenly suffered <strong>severe seizures</strong> that led to <strong>catastrophic brain swelling</strong>. Days later, she required <strong>emergency brain surgery.</strong> Doctors were forced to remove half of her skull in order to relieve pressure and save her life.

<div><strong>Aleena survived.</strong>

<div><strong>But her life changed forever.</strong>

She is not yet able to move or communicate the way she once did. She can <strong>no longer talk, walk, use her arms, or even sit up on her own.</strong> She is <strong>unable to eat by mouth</strong> and currently relies on medical support for nutrition. We are also <strong>not yet certain how clearly she can see or hear</strong>. She requires <strong>constant medical care, close monitoring, and specialized support</strong> for even the most basic daily activities.

<div><strong>What Happened</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>To this day, doctors still do not know the exact trigger that caused Aleena’s condition. From what we do know, she developed <strong>autoimmune encephalitis</strong> — a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the brain. What began as a <strong>common cold</strong> progressed into an infection that affected her brain. Her immune system fought the infection, but even after it cleared, something caused her immune response to continue <strong>attacking her own brain</strong>.

<div>This led to <strong>severe inflammation and cerebral edema (dangerous brain swelling)</strong>, causing <strong>significant and lasting damage</strong> — some of which remains present to this day.
</div>

</div>
<div>What caused her illness <strong>remains unknown</strong> and is considered <strong>extremely rare</strong> — a condition that affects only a <strong>tiny fraction of children worldwide</strong> and is something most physicians never encounter in their careers. This has been confirmed by medical professionals involved in her care at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), as well as specialists consulted through the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

<div>Because of this rarity and uncertainty, Aleena’s recovery path is complex and unpredictable.

<li>Intensive physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy beyond what is publicly funded. Research consistently shows that early, sustained therapy significantly improves outcomes in children with brain injury.

<li>Ongoing caregiving support and medical supplies to ensure her safety and stability.
