Help Ahmed make his college dream come true

Who Am I?

My name is Ahmed Sakara Kargbo, I am 27 years old. Last february I lost my father. My father and I had a strong bond. As a child I always saw my father working in his little auto garage. I saw how he worked on the cars and within a few minutes they did work like brand new again. For me as a child that was like magic. When my father saw how intrigued I was he decided to bring me with him on the working floor. I could always see on his face how happy he was that his son shared the same passion as him.

After obtaining my diploma in computer science at UNIMAK University,  I did apply for my dream study “Mechanical Engineering” . For this upcoming school year I was accepted and received an offer from Hanze University in The Netherlands. However during this time my beloved father did came to pass of cancer. At this point I didn’t know what to feel, because I knew I was accepted for my dream study, but during the same period I also lost my father. The happy feelings didn’t stay long, because I did came to realize that my father also did paid for my fees. At this point it felt like I lost everything. I knew I couldn’t pay for the fees on my own, I had to make the difficult and heartbreaking decision of declining the offer.

Why Hanze University of Applied Sciences in the Nederlands?

The course I want to do is called "Mechanical Engineering". They give this study at two schools in the Netherlands. One in Twente and the other one in Groningen at the Hanze. The one that I want to attend to is Hanze in Groningen. Before I did choose a school, I did researched which school was the best in giving engineering study. In the end my choice came out at Hanze University. The University of Applied Sciences of Hanze is located in the vibrant student city of Groningen. They have a wide variety of International Bachelor’s and Exchange courses. Applied research and innovation is highly integrated in their academic programs. For me as an African who comes from very far, this is a great opportunity. The Netherlands has a great infrastructure for culture and I want to learn everything from and about this. Although the language barrier poses a bit of a challenge, studying in a country as multicultural as the Netherlands, and a University as innovative as the Hanze will serve as a great stepping stone towards fulfilling my dreams. It would provide me with opportunities to pursue an engaging career. 

Issues With Funding

I am a Sierra Leonen citizen, meaning that I have non-EU nationality. As a result, my tuition fees are significantly higher than that of students with EU citizenship. The full tuition for the entire study is €34.600; each academic costing a total of €8650. This cost does not include the cost of required textbooks,  I will need to purchase once I begin. There is an option to pay in 6 installments per year, however the ability to fully pay the entire tuition on my own is very low. As I am no longer living in Sierra Leone, it is near impossible for me to rely on/ acquire funding from there. Furthermore, although I worked in Cyprus, work that included an internship, these were largely unpaid so I was unable to save much money. In the meantime, I am searching for work that will allow me to save up some money and although it may not be much, I understand that every little bit helps, which is why I need and would appreciate some more help by way of this funding.

This whole journey would not be possible without my family and friends in Africa and in the Netherlands. I am very grateful to them all. And a special thanks to my girlfriend who lives in The Nederlands. Without her, I would probably have already given up on my dream. She opened my eyes, that life is never without risk. But that doesn't meen that you should give up that easely. 

At the end of February I can register for the training again. The school has set the goal for every foreign student outside the EU that you must be able to demonstrate that you can finance the study. This must also be demonstrable to the IND (the Immigration and Naturalization Service). That's why they want you to be able to prove that you have €20.000. This is to show that you can finance yourself in The Netherlands. 

My hope is that I won't have to make the same decision next academic year, should I be able to reach the target.

Wie ben ik?

Mijn naam is Ahmed Kargbo, en ik ben 27 jaar. Begin dit jaar verloor ik mijn vader. Mijn vader en ik hadden een sterke band. Als kind zag ik mijn vader altijd werken in zijn kleine autogarage. Ik zag hem aan de auto's werken en binnen een paar minuten liepen ze weer als vanouds. Als kind was dit magie voor mij. Toen mijn vader zag hoe geïntrigeerd ik was, besloot hij me mee te nemen naar de werkvloer. Ik kon altijd aan zijn gezicht zien hoe blij hij was dat zijn zoon dezelfde passie deelde als hij.

Waarom studeren in Nederland?

Nadat ik mijn diploma behaalde in computer science op UNIMAK universiteit, heb ik me ingeschreven voor mijn droomopleiding “Mechanical Engineering” . Voor het aankomende schooljaar was ik geaccepteerd voor deze studie op de Hanze hogeschool. Tijdens deze periode kreeg ik ook te horen dat mijn vader kwam te overlijden door een ziekte waarbij hij  al een paar jaar tegen vocht, kanker. Op dat moment wist ik niet meer wat ik moest voelen, want ik wist dat ik geaccepteerd was voor mijn droomstudie, maar op hetzelfde moment was ik ook mijn vader kwijt. Mijn vader betaalde ook mijn schoolgeld, dat viel ook weg waardoor ik moest stoppen met mijn studie.

Waarom deze inzamelactie 

De opleiding die ik wil gaan doen heet "Mechanical Engineering".  Deze opleiding word gegeven op twee scholen in Nederland. Namelijk eentje in Twente en in Groningen op de Hanze. De opleiding waarvoor ik heb gekozen is op de Hanzehogeschool in Groningen. Voor mij als Afrikaan is dit een geweldige kans. Hoewel de taalbarrière een beetje een uitdaging vormt, zal studeren in een land, zo multicultureel als Nederland, en dat er een universiteit is die zo innovatief is als de Hanze, dienen als een grote opstap naar het vervullen van mijn dromen. Ik wil namelijk na mijn studie de opgedane kennis gebruiken in Afrika. Ik wil graag mijn kennis delen met anderen en uiteindelijk een eigen bedrijf starten om ook zo meer banen te creëeren voor anderen. Het zou mij mogelijkheden bieden om een boeiende carrière na te streven.

Help me

Aangezien ik een buitenlandse student ben, is mijn collegegeld aanzienlijk hoger dan dat van studenten uit de EU. Het collegegeld voor de gehele studie met boeken en al bedraagt €34.600,-. Elk studiejaar kost in totaal €8650,-. Waarschijnlijk iets meer omdat je soms extra boeken moet kopen van school.

Door alle tegenslagen ben ik toch vastbesloten om mijn droom, om de beste studie en kennis te kunnen krijgen, niet los te laten. Helaas zijn mijn aanvragen op verschillende beschikbare studiebeurzen afgewezen. Dit was een enorme teleurstelling voor mij, maar toch wilde ik het blijven proberen om de kans en hoop niet op te geven.

Familie en vrienden helpen me al, maar het is niet genoeg! Daarvoor heb ik uw hulp nodig!

Eind februari kan ik me weer inschrijven voor de opleiding. De school heeft als regel dat voor iedere buitenlandse student van buiten de EU, gesteld wordt dat je moet kunnen aantonen dat je de studie kunt  financieren en dat je in je eigen levensonderhoud kan voorzien. Dit moet ook aantoonbaar zijn bij de IND (de Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst). Daarom willen ze dat je kunt aantonen dat je voor het 1e studiejaar €20.000,- hebt.

Ik vraag hierbij een donatie van iedereen die mij wil helpen om het benodigd bedrag bij elkaar te krijgen.

Ik waardeer uw donatie zeer en in ruil daarvoor zou ik ervoor zorgen dat ik het meeste uit deze studie haal en dat ik hard werk om mijn dromen te verwezenlijken.
