About Abdi

Abdi was born in Kenya where his parents were living as refugees from Somalia. When he was two, he moved to the United States. He attended Metzger Elementary and Fowler Middle School. He will graduate from Tigard High School in June. Abdi has seven siblings and was raised by his parents in an apartment in Metzger (Tigard).  Abdi will be a first generation college student. He was admitted to multiple universities and after much consideration, he selected Howard University, one of the top-ranked Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the nation (Go Bison!) and will be heading to Washington D.C. in the fall.

Abdi's Accomplishments

- Author of the Tigard-Tualatin School District’s “Hate Speech and Bias Incidents” policy, the first of its kind in the state, which was used as one of the model policies to inform the new rule approved by the State Board of Education, “Every Student Belongs”.
- President of the Tigard-Tualatin Student Union, where he has led a two-year-long advocacy effort to eliminate pay-to-play fees to make athletics and extracurricular activities accessible for all students.
- As an ASB Officer, he was co-founder and lead organizer of “Unity Day ” and this year, “Unity Month” a district-wide equity initiative designed to bridge cultural gaps and build community.
- President of the Tigard High School Black Student Union where he helped organize the first-ever civil rights march for Black Lives from Tualatin to Tigard, to protest racism and support racial justice in our community and nationally. Abdi and the march were covered in the state newspaper of record, local newspapers, television stations, and podcasts .
- Capitol Ambassador for the Oregon Association of Student Councils where he has advised the Oregon Department of Education on creating more inclusive school cultures and testified before the House Education Committee.
- Appointed by the City Council and Mayor to serve on the City of Tigard’s Public Safety Advisory Board to review public safety practices in the city.

How You Can Help

Abdi has earned over $100,000 in scholarships! While this is incredibly exciting, the total cost of attending Howard for four years is approximately $190,000. Abdi needs the community's help to make this incredible educational opportunity possible. Any amount, big or small, is greatly appreciated!

100% of the proceeds from this fundraiser will be used by Abdi for his educational experience at Howard, including: tuition, books and supplies, room and board, travel to Washington D.C., and more. If you have any questions, or if you would prefer to donate directly to Abdi's 529 College Savings Account, please email [email redacted]. Thank you!
