Guinea is a country on the south-western coast of West Africa. It is 6 times the size of Switzerland, and has a population of 13 million. Guinea has diamonds, gold, and other metals, and more than 25% of the world's known reserves of bauxite, which is the main source of aluminium and gallium (used in computer chips). Despite this, Guinea is among the poorest counties in the world. Ranked by GDP per capita, Guinea is 155th; Switzerland is 6th, with a GDP per capita 30 times that of Guinea.
About 75% of the population are farmers. In many villages, they can only produce enough for their own consumption, because they are not knowledgeable about efficient agricultural methods, and because they do not have a place to store food for transport to cities by truck, which at best runs only once per week.
In July, I will be traveling to a village in Guinea. The Swiss association, Nouvelle Planète, is running a project in this village to:
- Instruct the villagers in efficient farming methods; and
- build a storage house for surplus food that can then be sold.
This is the third time I participate in a Nouvelle Planète project in Guinea. My part in this project consists of lending a hand during my stay, but it is mainly to fund the project.
I will therefore be doing a sponsored bike ride to support the Guinea project: in May, I will bike around the Leman. I will start and finish at my home in the Jura (Arzier), a 187 km ride.
Please sponsor me by pledging any amount. 100% of your donation will be transferred to the project in the village in Guinea.
