Help a Senior Flood Victim in NJ

Donation protected
On August 13th, a heavy rain storm dumped nearly 8 inches of water on Brick, NJ in a matter of hours.  The result was flooding that required a boat rescue to evacuate the senior residents of the Green Brier retirement community.  Areas of the community suffered damage from  a few inches to 4 feet of water in the homes. The flooding caused the sewers to overflow, spewing waste into the floodwaters and ultimately into people's homes.

This area was not considered a flood zone so homeowners did not carry flood insurance.  As a result, residents, both owners and renters, are now responsible for covering all of their losses on their own.  This is a challenge for most people and even more so for seniors, most of whom are on a fixed income.

Teodora (Teddi) Mendoza is one of the residents affected by this storm.  In addition to losing furniture, appliances, her imported Persian rug, and various other items that were damaged by the flooding, she is not able to return to her home until the landlord can complete the necessary repairs.  Teddi has been paying to stay in a nearby hotel while waiting for her home repairs to be completed.

The damages to Teddi's belongings total approximately $15,000.  On top of this damage, Teddi has incurred debt by paying over $2000 on hotel costs so far.  The hotel debt will continue to rise until Teddi can return to her home.  Her landlord has kindly waived rent for September and October.  While this is very generous, it does not fully cover the hotel costs nor the cost for obtaining meals (hotel room has no kitchen).

Teddi, an animal lover and frequent shelter volunteer, is already in the midst of paying down debt incurred for veterinary care for her cat as well as the pets of a close friend whose medical care she occasionally  financed.  This unexpected setback will add to her total debt and also hinder her ability to repay the previous debt in a timely manner.

Teddi has been a friend of my family since before I was born.  When I was growing up, she was like a 3rd older sister to me.  It breaks my heart to see her in this unexpected situation. I feel I have to do what I can to help her recover from this loss.  If I could spare $20,000 dollars, I would gladly give it to this woman out of my own pocket.  Please consider donating to help offset these unexpected costs for my dear friend.

Thank you.
