Help a queer refugee couple come to Canada

Imagine being forced to hide your relationship. Imagine the consequences of being found out: imprisonment, corporal punishment, or even execution. This is the reality for many queer folks worldwide. More than a third of all countries treat same-sex relationships as a criminal offense, and about 1 in 20 maintain the death penalty.
By contributing to this GoFundMe, you are backing up one queer couple in the difficult work of seeking asylum. They have fled life-threatening danger in their country of origin and are temporarily living in another country where they face severe discrimination. The next step in their journey to safety is to resettle in a country where their rights as a same-sex couple are backed by law. For safety reasons, their identity and the details of their story cannot be disclosed.
This fundraiser is organized by Bani Adam , a small group of volunteers who are sponsoring the couple to relocate to Canada with help from Rainbow Refugee Society . We need community support to make it happen.
Our immediate goal is to raise $19,000, the minimum required to submit a refugee sponsorship application. We need $10,000 more to reach that amount. The longer we wait, the longer the couple will face persecution and the risk of violence.
If 400 people each pitch in $25, we can submit the sponsorship application without delay! Then, we will continue raising funds to cover the couple’s living expenses for their first year in the Vancouver area (for a total of $35,000).
