Margarita* recently arrived in Maryland from Orlando, Florida, where she lived with her partner, Rafael* and 15 yo daughter, Teresa. After Rafael was abducted in January, Margarita did her best to sustain life for herself and Teresa, but struggled, and recently came to Maryland to be with her sister. She left all of her belongings with a trusted friend in Florida–that friend has recently stopped responding to her messages, so Margarita and Teresa have now lost everything.

Before he was detained, Rafael had applied for and received a Social Security Card, secured a work permit, and had a job at a factory that made ambulances. He showed up for all of his check-ins pending his appeal for asylum. But none of this mattered to ICE. They detained him at 4:30 a.m. as he was leaving for work. They threw away his driver’s license and papers and sent to the infamous “Alligator Alcatraz,” known for its inhumane conditions, before transferring him to a detention center in Louisiana. From there, he was deported to Nicaragua–all within 18 days of his arrest.

While at Alligator Alcatraz, Rafael’s blood pressure spiked. Agents recklessly delayed care–when they finally brought him to a hospital, he was shackled to a bed, monitored briefly, and then returned to prison. He endured shortage of food and water, and now–in Nicaragua–Rafael is at a different kind of risk.

The Nicaraguan government has been imprisoning many of those who arrive as deportees, and Rafael was a target. With the help of a kind stranger, he was able to leave Managua, the capital, and now is staying in the humble home of a relative. He remains in hiding.

Back in Maryland, Margarita and Teresa are struggling to re-start their lives. They need funds for food, rent, transportation, healthcare, and cellphones. Young Teresa is depressed, having lost both her father and her friends in Florida. Margarita is doing everything she can to make ends meet. Please contribute whatever you can to support this family as they transition to life in Maryland, without Rafael.
