My husband is a United States Air Force (USAF) service member and has been deployed to South Korea for the last year. He recently received orders that we will be moving (PCSing) to Germany. Unfortunately, this news has been disheartening as moving with our two beloved dogs: Zoey (Husky) and Murphy (Boston Terrier) will be financially difficult for us as the military does not assist with the costs of moving service members pets.
In limited cases the military will offer service members the opportunity to fly their pets on a military aircraft rotator. Unfortunately for us we received my husbands orders too late as there was no flight availability left for our departure date (March 15th).
So to keep our dogs, we must fly them through a professional pet forwarder for their guaranteed travel and safety overseas.
This arrangment is especially necessary because Murphy, our sweet boy Boston Terrier is characterised as a "snubbed-nose" breed of dog and therefore embargoed (restricted) by all airlines (domestic and international) due to the breeds associated health risks flying. Therefore, airlines will not accept these types of dogs unless shipped through a pet forwarder (professional).
We have been quoted by the pet forwarder Airpets American that the total cost of flying both Zoey and Murphy overseas will be $3,992.
Anything you can spare will be helpful towards Zoeys and Murphys safe travels. Not to mention a USAF service members efforts to keep his two dogs from being left behind.
Sadly, due to the difficulty and costs many military service members like ourselves are forced to give up ownership of their furry family members with PCS (Permanent Change of Station) moves.
Our dogs are family to us and that is why we are determined to make sure they make this move overseas with us.
