Help a Black Queer Femme Remain Housed in Brooklyn

Donation protected
Stonie Morrison (she/her) is a Black Queer Femme artist.  She is an immunocompromised person, and has suffered critical loss of income as a pet care specialist because of Covid-19 restrictions. Unfortunately, Stonie is not currently eligible for unemployment, food assistance, or other government programs.

Stonie is no stranger to crisis as she has escaped an abusive relationship, and survived homelessness while living in NYC’s violent shelter system for over a year.  She is the only Black tenant residing in her 6 unit building in Brooklyn, NY and there is only one other non Black PoC neighbor in the building.

At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, her two white housemates made it clear that they did not care about her safety.  They engaged in malicious actions such as:

-Refusing to practice harm reduction and basic cleaning and sanitizing standards issued by the CDC, and leaving common areas in filthy conditions on a daily basis

-Hoarding PPE and cleaning supplies while refusing to use it in their home

-Using gaslighting and micro aggressions to foster an anti black living environment

- Threatening to not help her if she became ill

Thankfully, Stonie listened to her survival instinct and Spirit telling her to retreat to her tiny bedroom. She resorted to using her limited funds, and innovative thinking to safely store, cool, and prepare her meals within her personal living space. She was confined to her room with her cat Miles for upwards of 20hrs per day for months. This turned out to be very a wise move, as at least one white housemate had active Covid-19 and did not inform her.

When confronted about these clearly critical issues, the white housemates escalated things using racist threats. Eventually, after they summoned police to her home multiple times, these violent individuals abandoned the apartment. In doing so they left Stonie's tenancy vulnerable and unsafe.

Despite everything, Stonie has managed to pay the portion of the rent that she would normally be responsible for over the past few of months by using every resource available to her. Now the property management company is demanding $13,000 or they will evict her.

The goal of this fundraiser is not only to maintain Stonie's home, but also allow her to create housing, art, and safe healing space for additional Black, Queer, and Trans/ nonbinary people in Brooklyn. She will be in charge of funds and ultimately decide how anything raised above the ransom being demanded by KNG Property Management will be used.

Stonie needs to secure a guarantor/ cosigner. A white person with good credit should volunteer to do this. Is that you? It would help greatly if she could be put in contact with a pro bono housing lawyer. You could consider hiring her a lawyer. She also has beautiful original artwork for sale.

The funds are need by June 23rd and donating to Stonie is a great way to celebrate Juneteenth!
