Help a bear cub fly...

Ross Fraser & Triple A’s Autism charity, Aberdeen.
Sometimes something comes along that drives you to succeed despite all the obstacles in your path. For me, my inspiration was my wife and my daughter.

I never thought I would be a writer. In fact, I didn't learn to read or write until I was 10.  I am dyslexic and I discovered I am autistic last year at the age of 42. I also broke my spine, almost 14 years ago, leaving me in constant pain and limited mobility. Unfortunately, it has meant I haven't been able to work since, not out of choice but circumstance.

When I found out my wife was expecting our daughter I wanted to find a way to provide for my family. I have written two children's stories and with your help, I will be able to publish my first one Kaleidoscope later this year. Being on a low income because of my injury I can't do this alone, and really need your support.

I have teamed up with a local autistic charity in Aberdeen Triple A’s - who will be receiving a donation of £1 from every copy of my picture book ‘Kaleidoscope’ that is sold. I intend to donate from the sale of future books published as well. I really want my work to help smaller autistic charities and the communities they care for because I know how tough it is to grow up without that support.

Tell us about your book
Not too many spoilers but it’s the story of a lost bear cub, and the kindhearted butterfly that does all she can to help the cub find his way home. It has been subtly and sensitively illustrated to be more accessible for autistic children. We have crafted the illustrations very carefully, for example, avoiding trigger colours by using softer tones and traditional artwork (as opposed to computer-generated) to be more gentle on the eye. The illustrations haven’t just been designed for an autistic child, but instead, it has been created in a way which is more inclusive to all children.

What is the money for?
The money is to help get the book published and give me a chance at a new career after almost 14 years out of work. This means more to me than just an income, it’s fulfilling a dream for my daughter and my wife as much as it is for me.

The money will get the book edited, formatted, illustrated, printed, and published. It will allow me to share the story I have read to my daughter hundreds of times over the years, a story of hope, determination, and family. But most of all I want it to inspire my daughter to follow her dreams regardless of any hurdles she faces along the way.

I have dreamed of seeing Kaleidoscope in print in my daughter’s hands for many years. From then who knows, and that’s the most exciting part, thinking of everything that could potentially come next. I won’t deny I want to be able to help support my family with the release of this book, but it is more than that. I want to write more, publish more and help charities provide support to more and more autistic people, as well as their families with the sale of each book. Yes, you could donate directly to a charity. However, giving me the chance to reach my goal means I can donate £1 from the sale of each and every book sold that I write and publish from now on. And I really hope that has a really positive impact on a lot of people’s lives.

Thank you very much for reading and for your support.

Ross

This is just a small example of my writing, I wrote for my wife for Mother's Day a few years ago, I hope you enjoy it.

MUMMY MATTERS
My mummy doesn’t dance on stage,
Or wear the clothes that are all the rage.
She can’t make it Christmas every day,
Or move our house to beside the bay.
She isn’t a princess nor a queen,
And can’t use magic to keep things clean.
She doesn’t drive the fastest car,
Or have a driver like a movie star.
She doesn’t work as a super spy,
Or drives a car that goes through the sky.
She can’t buy all the latest things,
And doesn’t have a castle or palace like kings.
She isn’t on a star on the Walk of Fame,
Or knows how to make wild animals tame.
She isn’t a doctor to famous pets,
Or flies around the world in private jets.
But I know for a fact whatever will be,
I really love her and she really loves me.
