A minha filha Sofia, de 46 anos, vive em Braga com os seus 2 filhos, Lucas, 15 anos e Miguel, 12, que estão em guarda partilhada com o pai, e o seu cão, Lucky.
My daughter Sofia, 46 years old, lives in Braga with her two sons, Lucas - who is 15, and Miguel, aged 12, in shared custody with their father.
No início de 2019, com 44 anos, a Sofia teve as primeiras suspeitas que algo não estaria bem com a sua saúde. Após exames no hospital público de Braga recebemos a pior notícia da nossa vida: a Sofia tinha um cancro, que começou por ser diagnosticado apenas na mama, estágio 2, potencialmente operável e tratável. Contudo, após outros exames mais extensivos, verificou-se uma situação bastante mais grave, pois já se tinha espalhado, sendo o diagnóstico final um Carcinoma Ductal Invasor, estágio 4, metastatizado para o fígado e pulmão esquerdo. Nesse momento, apesar de rodeada pela família mais próxima (pais e irmã) o seu mundo desabou: “fiquei sem chão e sem horizonte, senti que perdi completamente o rumo e o controlo da minha vida e por algum tempo fiquei muito deprimida e assustada”. Outras avaliações médicas, uma no IPO do Porto e outra na Fundação Champalimaud em Lisboa coincidiram no essencial no diagnóstico, apontando para uma doença crónica em estágio avançado. Não se vislumbrando possibilidade de cura, de acordo com os médicos, foram recomendados tratamentos paliativos para tentar algum controlo sobre a doença, sendo a esperança de vida estimada de 5 anos.
In early 2019, at 44, Sofia – who had always looked after her health and been quite active physically, felt that something wasn't right. After several exams in the public hospital in Braga we received the worst news of our life, the kind you think it only happens to strangers: Sofia had cancer. Initially diagnosed only as breast cancer (stage 2, potentially operable and treatable), the news was shocking, yes, terribly so, but still quite “comprehensible” and emotionally “manageable”. However, after other more extensive exams, a much more serious situation was found: the cancer had already spread, with the final diagnosis being an Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, stage 4, metastasized to the liver and left lung. At that moment, despite being surrounded by her closest family (parents and sister) Sofia's world collapsed: - "I felt utterly helpless, in total despair and without horizon, like I completely lost the direction and control of my life, and for some time I was deeply depressed, so scared and so angry!" We then decided to ask for two more medical evaluations, one at the Portuguese Oncology Institute (IPO), in Porto, and the other at the Champalimaud Foundation, in Lisbon – dedicated to cancer treatment and research. Unfortunately, and in essence, both confirmed the diagnosis, pointing to cancer at an extremely advanced stage and with no possibility of cure. Palliative treatments were recommended to try to control the disease, with estimated life expectancy of 5 years.
Os tratamentos sugeridos inicialmente seriam à base de controlo hormonal, por medicação e posteriormente quimioterapia e radioterapia. A cirurgia foi descartada porque no caso de metástases em vários órgãos vitais é impraticável operar todos os órgãos afetados. O problema maior neste tipo de tratamentos são os efeitos secundários, que não só vão retirando qualidade de vida como vão degenerando os órgãos vitais tão importantes para a manutenção da vitalidade.
Mas algo lhe dizia que não podia ser o fim. Reuniu forças e decidiu que queria viver e que iria fazer tudo para conseguir ultrapassar aquele diagnóstico e a sentença revelada! Começou então a investigar alternativas e exemplos de superação que acabaram por inspirar o caminho que decidiu seguir. Isto implicou não iniciar de imediato tratamentos químicos e radiológicos convencionais, que não só não prometiam uma cura como por certo lhe iriam causar muita degeneração e sofrimento.
The treatments initially suggested would be based on hormonal control medication (cancer that progresses through hormonal receptors) and later, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Surgery was simply ruled out because in the case of metastases in several vital organs it would be impractical to operate on all the affected organs. - The biggest problem in this type of treatment is the secondary effects, which not only reduce and eventually completely kill all quality of life, but also degenerate vital organs.
But something inside told her this couldn't be the end, even if, in other words, the doctors implied that. She gathered all strength she could possibly find facing this life/death situation and decided she wanted to live, and that she would do everything in her power to overcome the diagnosis and death sentence given to her. And to us!
Faced with this very disheartening scenario that took away any perspective of an effective cure, she began investigating alternatives and examples of people who did it successfully, overcoming “impossible” obstacles. This research showed her an inspiring path that she decided to follow. It involved moving away from conventional chemical and radiological treatments, which in addition to not promising a cure, would certainly cause Sofia much degeneration and suffering.
O caminho alternativo que encetou, e que exigiu uma enorme dedicação e empenho por parte da Sofia, tem estado a dar alguns bons resultados, como tem sido comprovado com os exames que regularmente vai fazendo no IPO – Porto, com um razoável controlo do crescimento dos tumores, alguma baixa, ainda que incipiente, dos marcadores tumorais e até a obtenção e manutenção de bons níveis de energia, quase sem dores físicas ou quaisquer efeitos secundários. No entanto, não sendo estes tratamentos suportados ou financiados pelo SNS, obrigam a despender avultados recursos, que apesar de todo o apoio que tem recebido de familiares e amigos, não vão chegando para dar continuidade a tudo o que ainda será necessário fazer. Estes tratamentos não podem esperar ou ser interrompidos pelo facto de, numa situação como esta, o tempo ser um fator importante e determinante para a doença se curar ou não.
This courageous choice for an alternative path, which took enormous amounts of dedication and commitment from Sofia's side and from all of us, fortunately has been giving some positive results, as proven by the exams she regularly takes at the Portuguese Oncology Institute (IPO) showing reasonable control of tumour growth, and some low, albeit incipient reduction of tumour markers and even the attainment and maintenance of good energy levels, with almost no physical pain or side effects. However, these treatments are not supported by the Portuguese National Health Service, and they require big financial resources, which despite the support received from family and friends, are not enough to follow through with all mandatory treatments for a possible cure. Treatments that cannot be delayed, as time is of the essence, and any interruption causes a negative development.
Estima-se que nos próximos 5 anos ou talvez mais, terá de continuar com todo um conjunto de tratamentos para conseguir superar e vencer a doença. E bem ao contrário do que lhe foi sentenciado, acreditamos que vai conseguir.
It is estimated that in the next 5 years or maybe more, Sofia will have to go through a whole set of treatments to have a chance to overcome the cancer. And contrary to what was sentenced to her by the conventional approach, given the positive results the alternative path showed so far, we believe she will succeed!
Além dos tratamentos referidos, há a parte emocional que também necessita de atenção, cuja abordagem terapêutica terá como objetivo ir à raiz do problema. Há algumas clínicas e terapias específicas em diferentes locais do mundo com diferentes abordagens na área da cura do cancro que estão na lista dos objetivos da Sofia, caso consiga reunir os recursos necessários.
In addition to the treatments mentioned above, there is a crucial part that also needs healing: the emotional body. This healing involves another type of therapeutic approach to get to the root of the problem. There are some specific clinics and therapies in different locations around the world with different approaches in the area of cancer cure and with significant success rates. They are on Sofia's list of optional treatments if she manages to secure sufficient funds.
Como pai e ser humano, restas-me apenas dizer que só quem enfrenta um problema destes percebe o quão impotentes e frágeis nos podemos sentir quando confrontados com um problema de saúde desta gravidade, onde querer ajudar não chega, e é preciso acreditar que vamos conseguir, ter determinação nas medidas a tomar e saber pedir ajuda no momento certo. Juntos somos mais fortes e podemos vencer as adversidades. A Sofia neste momento está a precisar da ajuda de todos nós para que um dia possa partilhar com o mundo tudo quanto aprendeu e a ajudou na sua cura!
As a father and as a human being, I can only say that only those who face something like this truly realize how powerless and fragile we feel when confronted with a health problem of this dimension, gravity and urgency. We have to share the belief that we will succeed, be determined in the measures we take and know how and when to ask for help at the right time. Together we are stronger and thus can overcome adversity. Sofia right now is in need of help from all of us so that one day she can help others too, by sharing everything she learned about her healing process with the world and those who will most need it.
