Hi! My name is Ellen. I’m a 26-year-old disabled activist fighting for my right to survive.

After a lifetime of medical gaslighting, misdiagnoses and diagnostic delay, I have become completely unable to work.

I suffer from over ten complex, invisible illnesses, including endometriosis, adenomyosis, POTS, C-PTSD, AuDHD and chronic cluster headaches — commonly known as the worst pain known to man.

The Dutch government (UWV) has systemically failed me, ignoring deadlines and violating its own rules. 1,5 years and a legal battle later this has resulted in a critical financial gap: if this campaign fails, I will lose my home and face hunger. This financial crisis is not just stressful — it’s actively worsening my health.

****THE STORY IN DETAIL (English — DUTCH BELOW)****

Hi, my name is Ellen! I’m a 26-year-old queer and neurodivergent woman living with multiple overlapping disabilities. I’ve always been disabled. However, for the majority of my life I was unable to get the right help, diagnoses, treatment and accommodations for my disabilities (for a variety of reasons).

After years of crippling, unmanageable symptoms, missed and delayed diagnoses, I now know that I suffer from:

Two brain diseases, namely:

(Chronic) migraines and;
(Chronic) cluster headaches;

Apart from this I have:

Endometriosis;
Adenomyosis;
And a form of dysautonomia called: Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or in short: POTS.

These physical conditions are layered with several mental health challenges and neurodivergent disabilities that further compound my daily struggle, namely:

C-PTSD - Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder;
ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder;
ASD - Autism Spectrum Disorder;
PMDD - Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder.

Additionally, I’m currently being assessed for: an immunological disorder and a connective tissue disorder. Both assessments are expected to lead to two new diagnoses soon.

Over the years - while desperately trying to navigate my life with complex PTSD - these challenges have compounded, leading to my current situation: I am unable to work and rely heavily on (financial) support from my friends to survive.

WHY I URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP

Living with multiple chronic conditions (and being unable to work) is incredibly costly. Many treatments, medical aids, and therapies are not fully covered. This is why today, I am unable to cover my basic living expenses. Your donations would help me pay for things like:

Housing & utilities;

Legal expenses.

Your support is fundamental to my survival, with some form of dignity. This is NOT about luxury. It’s about survival. It’s about having enough to eat, maintaining a roof over my head and allowing me to access the fundamental care I need to ensure my survival as a chronically ill and disabled person.

I’m currently in the midst of a legal battle against the Dutch governmental organization (UWV) responsible for disability support. This crowdfunding is intended as urgent emergency support — a bridge until my disability benefits are finally processed. Once that happens, I should be able to cover my own costs again.

THE FINANCIAL BREAKDOWN

The goal is to raise €19,050. This secures one year of life stability and access to necessary, crucial care and fundamental aids. This budget is allocated across two critical areas:

€11,270 for one year of survival & uncovered medical costs;

This covers the total gap between my income (student loan + student grant) and essential monthly expenses, such as: rent, food and over €500 a month in uncovered medical expenses.

€7,780 for fundamental mobility aids (e.g. scootmobile, shower chair, toilet chair), adaptive equipment (e.g. cleaning robot, heated diaper) and critical long-term stability costs (e.g. legal fees).

THE BACKSTORY: NOT ALL DISABILITIES ARE VISIBLE

People like me – who struggle with invisible disabilities – deserve to not just have our voices heard, but to live with dignity and to be able to access the support we need in order to survive. I share my story not for pity, but to demand recognition, understanding and systemic change.

Just because I don’t always look unwell doesn’t mean I’m healthy or symptom-free. A smile, brushed hair or a nice outfit are no accurate representation of one's health.

Invisible illnesses come with stigma and lots of misunderstanding, which influences how I’m treated in healthcare, in society and how my legal and social support is determined. Your donations help bridge the gap created by this systemic failure — they provide me with the necessary time and fundamental care that I can no longer afford on my own.

High-pain days vs. the aftermath

On high-pain days the combination of cluster headaches, endometriosis, adenomyosis and POTS flares leaves me bedridden, reliant on others for food and basic care (e.g. showering, brushing teeth, cooking etc). On days when I don’t flare as badly I can sometimes shower, make a sandwich, or do some small chores, like putting the dishes in the dishwasher (assisted by my walker). However, these days are nowhere near what ‘good’ should look like. They are survival days, spent catching up from past flares and preparing for the next inevitable crash.

History: the collateral damage of delayed care

My disabilities began presenting in early childhood with my first endometriosis and adenomyosis symptoms. By my early teens, I was experiencing migraines and cluster headaches, which doctors and caretakers misdiagnosed as only migraines (a story to unpack another time).

Although I’ve always been disabled, for years my disabilities were left undiagnosed and untreated, forcing me to suffer in silence. For more than a decade, this forced me to mask, hide and medicate my severe symptoms, because the healthcare system failed to provide accurate diagnoses and effective interdisciplinary care.

The consequences of this systemic neglect are devastating. Early intervention could have slowed the progression of my diseases and could have prevented years of progressively worsening physical damage. The catastrophic consequences include irreversible health damage, as well as financial and legal instability.

Did you know that Complex PTSD is scientifically linked to chronic conditions like mine? Studies show that both dysautonomia (POTS), my suspected immune disorder (MCAS), chronic pain conditions like endometriosis and adenomyosis, but also chronic headache diseases like cluster headaches and migraines can develop and exacerbate as a result of both C-PTSD (and childhood abuse).

“WHAT ARE YOUR DISABILITIES?

I have two brain diseases: chronic cluster headaches and chronic migraines. Apart from this, I have endometriosis, adenomyosis and a form of dysautonomia called POTS.

“BUT WHY DOESN’T THE GOVERNMENT HELP?”

Legally speaking, I am indeed entitled to aid; however, the situation is complex. The Dutch governmental organization responsible for disability benefits is UWV. Thanks to years of chronic underfunding and politically driven neglect, this organization is severely understaffed and, frankly, a complete mess.

Systemic neglect: my court case against the Dutch government

When my disabilities escalated to the point where they are today, I was a student. Thus, the only aid I’m entitled to is called a “WAJONG.” Although I applied for this type of support and have been assessed, my application was rejected in a report full of errors. Yet that same report also concluded: “I cannot work right now and will not be able to work in the future.”

Since then, I’ve appealed their decision and taken legal action, but procedures take forever. On top of that, the UWV has systematically ignored deadlines and consistently violated its own rules. My lawyers estimate that my case won’t appear in court until 2026 — which brings us to the reason I am launching this crowdfunding today.

This systemic neglect has forced me into poverty, worsening both my physical and mental health and contributing to the further destabilization of my life — making survival without your help and donations impossible.

“WHY DOESN’T YOUR FAMILY PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT?”

My Complex PTSD is the result of a traumatic history that made distance from my biological family necessary for my safety and well-being. Thanks to therapists and social workers, I was able to leave that environment at the age of 17 and move into a safe, protected home.

Although I have sporadically been in contact with (and received some donations from) biological family members over the years, I quickly learned that it will always be my word against that of my abusers and — as you may be able to understand — I have better things to do than negotiating reality.

****HET VERHAAL IN DETAIL (NL)****

Hi, mijn naam is Ellen! Ik ben een 26-jarige queer en neurodivergente vrouw die leeft met meerdere overlappende ziektes en beperkingen. Ik ben altijd chronisch ziek geweest. Alleen gedurende het overgrote deel van mijn leven had ik – om diverse redenen – geen toegang tot de juiste medische hulp, diagnostiek, behandeling of aanpassingen voor mijn beperkingen. Na jaren van slopende, onbeheersbare symptomen en zowel foutieve, als vertraagde diagnoses weet ik nu dat ik lijd aan:

Twee hersenziektes, namelijk:

(Chronische) migraine en;
(Chronische) cluster hoofdpijn.

Daarnaast heb ik:

Endometriose;
Adenomyose;
En een vorm van dysautonomie, genaamd: Posturaal Orthostatisch Tachycardie Syndroom, of kortweg: POTS.

Daarnaast spelen er verschillende mentale uitdagingen en neurologische ontwikkelingsstoornissen die de situatie verder compliceren, namelijk:

C-PTSS – Complexe Post Traumatische Stress Stoornis;
ADHD – Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder;
ASS – Autisme Spectrum Stoornis;
PMDD – Pre Menstruele Dysforie Stoornis.

Verder word ik momenteel onderzocht op: een immunologische aandoening en een bindweefselaandoening. Deze onderzoeken zullen naar alle waarschijnlijkheid spoedig leiden tot twee nieuwe diagnoses.

In de loop der jaren – terwijl ik zo goed en kwaad als mogelijk probeerde mijn leven met complexe PTSS te navigeren – zijn mijn beperkingen zodanig verergert dat ik vandaag de dag niet in staat ben om te werken en volledig afhankelijk ben van (financiële) steun van vrienden om te overleven.

WAAROM IK JOUW HULP NU NODIG HEB

Leven met meerdere chronische aandoeningen is buitengewoon kostbaar. Veel behandelingen, hulpmiddelen en therapieën worden niet (volledig) vergoed. Op dit moment kan ik niet in basale levenskosten voorzien. Jouw donatie helpt mij bij het betalen van dingen zoals:

Huur & nutsvoorzieningen;
Boodschappen;
(Niet vergoede) medische kosten / behandelingen;
Mobiliteitshulpmiddelen;
Schoonmaakhulp;
Juridische kosten.

Jouw steun is van levensbelang voor mij. Dit gaat NIET over luxe. Het gaat over overleven. Het gaat om voldoende eten hebben, een dak boven mijn hoofd behouden en toegang krijgen tot fundamentele zorg die noodzakelijk is om als chronisch ziek en gehandicapt persoon te overleven.

Momenteel ben ik verwikkeld in een juridische strijd tegen het Nederlandse overheidsorgaan (UWV) dat verantwoordelijk is voor uitkeringen. Deze crowdfunding is dan ook bedoeld als urgente noodsteun — ter overbrugging tot mijn uitkering wordt toegekend. Zodra dat gebeurt, kan ik mijn eigen kosten weer dekken.

DE FINANCIËN

Het doel is om €19.050,- op te halen. Dit bedrag voorziet mij van één jaar aan financiële stabiliteit en toegang tot cruciale zorg en fundamentele hulpmiddelen. Het budget bestaat uit twee categorieën:

€11.270,- voor één jaar overlevings- en onverzekerde medische kosten;

Dit bedrag dekt de kloof tussen mijn inkomen (studielening + gehandicapten studietoeslag) en essentiële maandelijkse uitgaven zoals huur, eten en meer dan €500,- per maand aan niet vergoede medische kosten.

DE VOORGESCHIEDENIS: NOT ALL DISABILITIES ARE VISIBLE

Mensen zoals ik - die achter gesloten deuren worstelen met onzichtbare beperkingen - verdienen het om niet alleen gehoord te worden, maar om met waardigheid te leven en toegang te hebben tot de essentiële ondersteuning die noodzakelijk is om te overleven. Ik deel mijn verhaal niet om medelijden te krijgen, maar om erkenning, begrip en systemische verandering te eisen.

Dat ik er niet altijd ziek uitzie, betekent niet dat ik gezond of symptoomvrij ben. Een glimlach, geborsteld haar of een goede outfit zijn geen accurate representatie van iemands gezondheid.

Onzichtbare ziekten gaan gepaard met veel stigma en onbegrip. Deze beïnvloeden hoe ik word behandeld in de gezondheidszorg, in de samenleving en hoe mijn wettelijke en sociale ondersteuning wordt bepaald. Jouw donaties financieren het gat dat door dit systematisch falen is gecreëerd — het koopt mij de noodzakelijke tijd en fundamentele zorg waarvoor ik zelf niet langer kan betalen.

Ik deel mijn verhaal niet om medelijden te krijgen, maar om erkenning, begrip en systemische verandering te eisen.

‘High-pain-dagen’ V.S. De nasleep

Op ‘high-pain-dagen’ maakt de combinatie van clusterhoofdpijn, endometriose, adenomyose en POTS-flares mij bedlegerig en afhankelijk van anderen voor eten en basiszorg (zoals douchen, tanden poetsen, koken etc.). Op dagen dat ik minder extreme klachten heb kan ik soms zelfstandig douchen, een boterham maken of kleine klusjes doen, zoals (ondersteund door mijn rollator) de vaat in de vaatwasser zetten. Alleen deze dagen zijn in de verste verte niet wat ‘goede’ dagen zouden moeten zijn. Het zijn overlevingsdagen, waarop ik bijkom van de vorige flares en me voorbereid op de onvermijdelijke volgende.

De achtergrond: onomkeerbare schade door vertraagde diagnostiek

Mijn beperkingen manifesteerden zich voor het eerst in de vroege jeugd met mijn eerste endometriose en adenomyose symptomen. Vanaf mijn tienerjaren begon de migraine en clusterhoofdpijn, die artsen en zorgverleners ten onrechte afdeden als ‘enkel migraine’ (a story to unpack another time).

Alhoewel ik altijd gehandicapt ben geweest, waren het overgrote deel van mijn beperkingen jarenlang ongediagnosticeerd en onbehandeld, waardoor ik achter gesloten deuren leed. Meer dan een decennium lang dwong dit mij ertoe mijn ernstige symptomen te maskeren, verbergen en mediceren, omdat de gezondheidszorg er niet in slaagde om accurate diagnoses en effectieve interdisciplinaire zorg te bieden.

De gevolgen van deze systematische nalatigheid zijn verwoestend. Vroege interventie had de progressie van mijn ziektes kunnen vertragen en jaren van progressief toenemende fysieke schade kunnen voorkomen. De catastrofale gevolgen: onomkeerbare lichamelijke schade en zowel financiële, als juridische instabiliteit.

Wist je dat de wetenschap Complexe PTSS linkt aan chronische aandoeningen zoals de mijne? Studies tonen aan dat zowel dysautonomie (POTS), mijn vermoedelijke immuunstoornis (MCAS), chronische pijn aandoeningen zoals endometriose en adenomyose, maar ook chronische hersenziektes zoals clusterhoofdpijn en migraine kunnen ontstaan en verergeren door C-PTSS (en mishandeling).

VEELGESTELDE VRAGEN (FAQ)

“WAT HEB JIJ?”

Ik heb twee hersenziekten: chronische clusterhoofdpijn en chronische migraine. Daarnaast heb ik endometriose, adenomyose en een vorm van dysautonomie genaamd POTS.

Bovendien ben ik autistisch, heb ik ADHD en lijd ik aan zowel Complex Post Traumatisch Stress Syndroom (C-PTSS), als Pre-Menstruele Dysforie Stoornis (PMDS).

Ik word momenteel onderzocht op Mest Cel Activatie Syndroom (MCAS, een immunologische aandoening) en Ehlers Danlos Syndroom (een bindweefselaandoening).

“MAAR WAAROM HELPT DE OVERHEID NIET?”

Juridisch gezien heb ik inderdaad recht op een uitkering, maar de situatie is complex. Het Nederlandse overheidsorgaan verantwoordelijk voor ziektewetuitkeringen is het UWV. Dankzij jaren van chronische onderfinanciering en politiek gedreven nalatigheid, is deze organisatie ernstig onderbemand en om eerlijk te zijn: een complete puinhoop.

Systematische nalatigheid: mijn rechtszaak tegen UWV

Toen mijn gezondheid escaleerde tot de huidige situatie, was ik een student. Daarom is de enige uitkering waarop ik recht heb een “WAJONG.” Deze uitkering heb ik aangevraagd, waarna ik op twee beoordelingsgesprekken ben geweest. In een verslag vol fouten is mijn aanvraag afgewezen. Toch is in datzelfde verslag de conclusie dat ik: “nu niet kan werken en dat in de toekomst ook niet kan.”

Tot nu toe heeft het UWV niet alleen steken laten vallen, maar ook systematisch deadlines genegeerd en haar eigen regels overtreden. Sindsdien heb ik juridische stappen ondernomen tegen het UWV, maar dergelijke procedures duren eindeloos. Mijn advocaten verwachten dat mijn zaak pas in 2026 voor zal komen — wat ons brengt bij de reden dat ik genoodzaakt ben deze crowdfunding te lanceren.

Deze systematische nalatigheid heeft ertoe geleid dat ik vandaag de dag in armoede leef, wat zowel mijn fysieke als mentale gezondheid verslechtert, wat bijdraagt aan de verdere ontregeling van mijn leven. Dit maakt overleven zonder jouw hulp en donaties onmogelijk.

“WAAROM KRIJG JE GEEN FINANCIËLE HULP VAN FAMILIE?”

Mijn Complexe PTSS is het resultaat van een traumatische geschiedenis die afstand van mijn biologische familie noodzakelijk maakte voor mijn eigen veiligheid en welzijn. Met dank aan therapeuten en hulpverlening kon ik die omgeving op 17-jarige leeftijd verlaten en verhuizen naar een veilige, beschermde woning.

Hoewel ik door de jaren heen sporadisch contact heb gehad met (en enkele donaties heb ontvangen van) biologische familieleden, heb ik snel geleerd dat het altijd mijn woord zal zijn tegen dat van mijn misbruikers en — zoals je wellicht begrijpt — heb ik betere dingen te doen dan onderhandelen over de werkelijkheid.
