<div>Kevin G. Montero is an inspiring 18-year-old with an unbreakable spirit. At just 16 years old, his life changed forever when he was tragically shot in the back, leaving him with a complete T10 spinal cord injury.
</div>

</div>
<div>A T10 injury means complete loss of use of the lower abdominal muscles, buttocks, legs, and feet, resulting in full paralysis below the waist. Despite these life-changing challenges, Kevin has refused to let his injury define him.
</div>

</div>
<div>Following his injury, Kevin spent time in inpatient rehabilitation and then returned home. Unfortunately, the ball was dropped, and he went months without therapy—a devastating setback for anyone recovering from a spinal cord injury. During that time, Kevin spent much of his day in bed, which led to severe wounds and painful joint contractures in his hips and knees. He lost nearly 40 pounds and became extremely weak and scared for his future.

<div>But Kevin refused to give up. Over the past year and a half with therapy, he has worked relentlessly to rebuild his strength and independence. His contractures have improved drastically—he’s now able to almost stand in parallel bars with support, his wounds are healing (though still a long process due to their depth), and his determination has never wavered.
</div>
<div>Being a teenager when all of this happened was incredibly hard. But Kevin’s resilience shines through in everything he does.

<div>Despite the obstacles, he has:

<li>Completed his schoolwork online and finished his high school diploma.
</li>
<li>Learned how to drive and earned his drivers license with adaptive driving equipment.
</li>
<li>Started his first job, gaining valuable experience and confidence.
</li>

<div>Many of the best grants and fundraisers for individuals with spinal cord injuries only provide assistance if the injury occurred through sports or recreational activities—not gun violence. Kevin’s injury circumstances have unfortunately excluded him from many of those opportunities. We have applied for every available grant and resource without success, which is why we are turning to our community for help.
