Help 11-year old Biniam with life-saving Surgery

 Biniam T. Alazar is an 11-year old boy from Eritrea, currently living in Ethiopia,  was diagnosed with severe S-shaped scoliosis at birth. Since early childhood, Biniam has seen several doctors and was told that he needs to go abroad for corrective surgery. The only available option was to wear a back brace to prevent the progression of scoliosis. He has been using back brace for over ten years, and his condition continues to get worse. He continues to suffer from progressively worsening scoliosis, decreased lung function, and increased risk of complications. Since 2018, Biniam has been a patient of Dr. Rick Hodes, JDC Spine program director, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Biniam was excited to meet Dr. Hodes for the first time in JDC, Addis Ababa. After meeting other patients, who were previously suffering from severe spine deformity and underwent successful surgical procedures, Biniam is very optimistic about his future.

 Dr. Rick has examined/evaluated Biniams condition and ordered all pertinent labs, including his X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, breathing tests (lung function test). Biniam's spine deformity has compressed his lungs and significantly reduced his lung function (40% decline). The recommended treatment is unavailable in Ethiopia, and Biniam’s only hope is to go abroad for multiple surgical procedures.

 The recommended initial treatment plan is ambulatory traction, have spinal rods, and screw surgically placed to allow him to remain in traction. Expandable spinal rods will give his body and lungs a chance to grow before he undergoes fusion surgery several years down the road. Hence, Biniam will need multiple procedures about every six months for the next two to three years, with an estimated total cost up to $45,000 for the entire treatment at FOCOS hospital Accra, Ghana. Based on his doctor’s assessment - without surgery, Biniam’s life will be significantly shortened and has a good chance of dying before reaching 20 years. Unfortunately, this treatment is not currently available in Ethiopia.

 His doctor recommends Biniam should immediately start treatment/surgery abroad, which has a high chance of success and may allow him to have a normal lifespan. Biniam’s family would like to proceed with the treatment plan as soon as possible; however, the financial burden of seeking treatment abroad is holding them back. All money raised will go towards Biniam’s medical expenses and ongoing care, as well as offset the cost of air travel/accommodations.
