The money raised will help fund lifesaving brain surgery in the USA for our twelve-year-old daughter Edith, who suffers from the catastrophic syndrome, FIRES. The surgery and advanced technique is not offered in Sweden where we live and is very expensive. We are deeply grateful for all contributions! Getting Edith this surgery in the USA is her only chance to get her life back.
Some weeks after her seventh birthday, Edith was struck by a rare and aggressive epilepsy syndrome called FIRES (“Febrile Infection Related Epilepsy Syndrome”). This syndrome inexplicably affects healthy school-aged children exposed to infection with flu type illnesses. Many children who develop FIRES don´t even survive the initial acute phase. Among those who do, a great majority suffer serious permanent global disabilities in addition to severe epileptic seizures. The seizures have a devastating impact on every aspect of their lives.
Edith was one of the lucky ones who survived the acute phase. She had to be placed under an induced coma and put on a respirator for four weeks. Throughout this time, the doctors tried to prepare us for the worst. Her chances of surviving were not good. But Edith didn´t give up and she survived!

The need for brain surgery
It feels absurd to write this, but I am a mother whose greatest wish is for my child to have brain surgery. I realize there are no guarantees with any surgery, especially something as delicate as this. However, I also realize what the alternative to not having this surgery will mean for our child. We have no choice but to pursue the only potential means for Edith’s survival and improvement. For six years, Edith has struggled every single day. Trapped in her own body and suffering from catastrophic seizures that leave her physically and psychologically exhausted, often in pain, and overwhelmed. In addition, she suffers from the severe side effects of all the medications she must take to try to control the seizures. These do not work and the epilepsy is out of control. It is hard to put into words the despair and powerlessness that me and my family feel. Our lives are completely on hold as we try to help our Edith. We are in some kind of bubble, outside of "ordinary life", in an ever-ongoing crisis without end. We must bear witness to our lovely little girl as this syndrome progressively torments her body and mind. The seizures caused by FIRES are destroying her brain and with it the opportunities for her to develop and flourish with each passing day.
After trying everything the Swedish health care system has to offer, we are now in contact with one of the most prominent level four epilepsy centres in the USA: Inter Mountain Primary Children´s Hospital in Utah. They have reviewed Edith´s medical records and believe they can help her with a novel, life-saving procedure. Finally, something could be done to help Edith and for the first time we actually have hope for her improvement.
RNS - a pacemaker for the brain
The life-saving procedure we are working so hard to get for our little girl is called “RNS” surgery. RNS stands for “Responsive Neurostimulation” - which is a pacemaker for the brain. Basically, the device is implanted and learns to pick up brain wave patterns that lead to seizures. It interrupts the patterns and the child simply doesn’t experience the brain damage that seizures cause. The treatment recommended means that Edith must undergo a series of preparatory examinations which includes invasive and expensive procedures only available at these select Epilepsy Centers in America. It is a difficult journey she must embark upon to get the device implanted, however, it holds the promise of a drastic reduction in her seizures. This alone would improve her overall well-being and quality of life. The RNS surgery is not experimental. It is well-established and fully approved in the US for use in adults and children. However, it is not available outside the US and so we are taking our little girl to Utah by any means necessary to save her life.
Since the RNS technique is not established in Sweden yet, the Swedish health care system will not provide any financial assistance. Unfortunately, we do not have the time to wait while the RNS surgery gets approved in Sweden. We are fighting a losing battle against time every day as the powerful epileptic seizures attack and destroy Edith's brain and with it all her opportunities to develop to the best of her potential.
Financial Needs
The advanced care that Edith so desperately requires will cost approximately 150 000 US dollar ( ~150.000 euros) and will be used for:
- Preparatory examinations to ensure that the procedure is performed safely. Part of the investigative phase involves surgically placing electrodes into the brain to find out where the seizures start. This is done to find out exactly how to place the pacemaker and to see if it is possible to combine the RNS technology with ressection surgery, where you remove parts of the damaged areas of the brain.
- The operation itself and the RNS device
- Approximately one month's stay in the United States when preparation and surgery are performed
- Travel between Sweden and the US every three months for up to two years to adjust the technology to Edith's needs
If the RNS technique won´t be enough it may open up for some other type of surgery that can benefit Edith. My family is using every penny we can to fund Edith’s medical needs, but unfortunately, it will not be enough. I never thought I'd be asking for financial help from others. But I also never imagined to be in this position with our beautiful girl. Our little fighter has endured so much already - things no child should ever go through. To see her suffer so much as she tries to cope with the assaults caused by these seizures is heartbreaking.

Hjälp 12-åriga Edith få hjärnoperation och besegra FIRES
Denna insamling går till att finansiera en livsnödvändig hjärnoperation i USA för vår dotter Edith, som drabbats av FIRES – en sjukdom som bryter ner livet för vår fina tjej. Operationen, med den avancerade teknik som krävs, finns inte i Sverige än och kostar mycket pengar. Vi är djupt tacksamma för alla bidrag! Att få hjälp i USA är vår enda möjlighet att ge Edith livet tillbaka.
Några veckor efter sin sjuårsdag drabbades Edith utan förvarning av den mycket aggressiva och ovanliga sjukdomen FIRES (Febrilt infektionsrelaterat epilepsisyndrom), som oförklarligt drabbar helt friska barn i skolåldern i samband med en infektion/influensa. En stor del av de barn som drabbas klarar inte den akuta fasen. Av de som klarar sig får många allvarliga funktionsnedsättningar och alla lider av mycket svår epilepsi som bryter ner livet.
Edith överlevde den akuta fasen. Hon vårdades nedsövd i respirator i fyra veckor. Flera gånger under dessa veckor försökte sjukvården förbereda oss i familjen på att det värsta kunde inträffa. Men Edith gav inte upp, hon överlevde!
Önskan om hjärnoperation
Det känns nästan lite overkligt att skriva det, men jag är en mamma vars högsta önskan är att mitt barn ska få genomgå en hjärnoperation. Jag vet att vi inte kan få alla garantier vid en operation, men jag vet vad alternativet innebär och att vi inte har något val. I sex års tid har Edith kämpat sig igenom varje dag, fånge i sin egen kropp, ständigt plågad av kraftiga anfall och svåra biverkningar av all medicin hon måste ta. Det är svårt att sätta ord på den förtvivlan och maktlöshet som vi i familj känner. Vårt liv är helt satt på paus. Vi befinner oss i en slags bubbla, utanför det ”vanliga livet”, i en ständigt pågående kris. Vi ser hur vår fina lilla tjej plågas och hur sjukdomen förstör hennes hjärna och möjligheter att utvecklas för varje dag som går.
Efter att ha provat allt som svensk sjukvård har att erbjuda är vi nu i kontakt med ett av de mest framstående epilepsicentren i USA: Inter Mountain Primary Children´s Hospital. De har granskat Ediths sjukdomshistoria, journal och undersökningar och tror att de, med hjälp av den senaste etablerade tekniken, kan hjälpa Edith. Det känns fantastiskt! För första gången ser vi att det finns hopp för Edith.
Pace maker på hjärnan
Behandlingen de rekommenderar innebär ett antal förberedande undersökningar och att Edith sedan får en Pacemaker inopererad på hjärnan som drastiskt kan minska hennes anfall, förbättra hennes mående och kognition. Tekniken, som heter Responsive neurostimulator (RNS), erbjuds vid alla stora epilepsicenter i USA, men eftersom den inte erbjuds i Sverige eller Europa än kan svensk sjukvård inte bekosta behandlingen. Tyvärr har vi inte möjlighet att invänta att RNS-tekniken etableras i Sverige. Vi för en kamp mot klockan då de kraftiga anfallen förstör Ediths hjärna och möjligheter att utvecklas för varje dag.
Beskrivning av kostnaderna
Den avancerade vård som Edith behöver beräknas kosta cirka 1.5 miljoner kronor i direkta kostnader, vilket ska bekosta:
- Olika förberedande undersökningar för att säkerställa att ingreppet sker på ett säkert sätt. En del i den utredande fasen innebär bland annat att man tillfälligt opererar in elektroder i hjärnan för att ta reda på var anfallen startar för att exakt veta hur Pace makern ska placeras och för att se om det eventuellt går att kombinera RNS-tekniken med restriktiv kirurgi, där man avlägsnar delar av skadat område.
- Själva operationen och RNS-tekniken
- Cirka en månads inläggning på sjukhus i USA när förberedelser och operation genomförs
- Resor mellan Sverige och USA var tredje månad under ett till två år för att ställa in och justera tekniken till Ediths behov.
Om RNS-tekniken inte kan stoppa Ediths anfall så kan vi tack vare den tekiken lära oss mer om Ediths epileptiska nätverk inne i hjärnana, vilket kan öppna upp för andra möjliheter att operera.
Vi kommer så klart själva spara ihop så mycket vi bara kan, men det kommer inte att räcka. Jag trodde aldrig att jag skulle vädja om ekonomisk hjälp, och jag önskar verkligen att jag inte hade behövt göra det. Men jag står här med min lilla kämpe som tvingats utstå så mycket som ett litet barn inte ska behöva vara med om, och vars kropp inte orkar den misshandel som sjukdomen orsakar länge till. Hon är i akut behov av avancerad hjärnkirurgi i USA, annars försvinner Edith allt längre bort från oss.
Vi är djupt tacksamma för all hjälp vi kan få – alla bidrag är värdefulla och gör skillnad!
Jag och min familj tar verkligen avstånd från all form av icke seriös insamling i sjuka barns namn. Varenda krona kommer att gå till att ge Edith livet tillbaka.

Ayuda a Edith de 12 años a ser operada en su cerebro y vencer la enfermedad FIRES
Esta cuestación tiene como propósito financiar los gastos de la operación en el cerebro de nuestra hija en USA. Edith contrajo la enfermedad FIRES, una enfermedad que apaga poco a poco la vida de Edith, nuestra hija. Esta operación que es muy costosa por la tecnología que requiere, no se realiza aún en Suecia.¡Estamos enormemente agradecidos por todo tipo de aportaciones! Recibir ayuda en USA es nuestra única posibilidad de prolongar la vida de nuestra hija Edith.
Unas semanas después de su séptimo cumpleaños Edith contrajo la rara enfermedad de FIRES ( Síndrome de epilepsia relacionado con infección febril) que afecta a niños sanos en edad escolar después de una infección gripal. La mayoría de los niños afectados no sobreviven la fase crítica. Los que consiguen sobrevivir, sufren graves discapacidades con ataques de epilepsia degenerativa.
Edith sobrevivo la fase crítica. Estuvo en estado de coma con respiración asistida durante 4 semanas. Durante estas semanas y con ayuda del personal hospitalario nos preparamos para lo peor imaginable. Pero Edith luchó y sobrevivió.
El deseo de una operación
Es como escribir algo irreal, pero yo soy una madre cuyo mayor deseo es una operación de cerebro para mi hija. Yo sé que no podemos contar con todas las garantías y sé cuál es la alternativa que nos queda y que no hay elección. Durante tres meses y medio Edith ha luchado cada día, presa en su propio cuerpo, constantemente atormentada por ataques epilépticos y duros efectos secundarios de todos los medicamentos que tiene que tomar . Es difícil describir con palabras la desesperación e impotencia que sentimos. Vivimos en una especie de encierro fuera de" la vida real" . Vemos como nuestra querida hija sufre y como la enfermedad degenera su cerebro día a día sin posibilidad de realizarse como persona.
Después de haber probado todo lo que la asistencia médica sueca puede ofrecernos, estamos ahora en contacto con uno de los centros de epilepsia más eminentes de USA: Inter Mountain Primary Children 's Hospital.
Allí han estudiado el historial médico de Edith y creen que con la ayuda tecnológica más innovadora podrán ayudar a Edith. Es algo increíble! por primera vez vemos que hay esperanzas para Edith.
Pacemaker en el cerebro
El tratamiento que recomiendan consiste en varios reconocimientos preparatorios y posteriormente se operaría un pacemaker en el cerebro de Edith que reduciría drásticamente los ataques, mejoraría su estado físico y cognitivo . Esta tecnología llamada Responsive Neurostimulator (RNS) es aplicada en todos los grandes centros de epilepsia de USA pero como no es asequible ni en Suecia ni en Europa, la asistencia médica sueca no puede costear los gastos del tratamiento.
Desafortunadamente no podemos esperar a que RNS se introduzca en Suecia. Luchamos contra reloj ya que los agudos ataques epilépticos de Edith están destruyendo su cerebro.
Descripción de los costos
Los cuidados médicos que Edith necesita tienen un costo aproximado de 1,5 millones de coronas suecas (150.000 euros) que serían:
- Análisis y exámenes preparativos para asegurar que el tratamiento se realiza con seguridad. Una parte de la fase inicial sería implantar electrodos en el cerebro para detectar dónde se inician los ataques y determinar la posición del pacemaker y ver si es posible combinar la tecnología RNS con cirugía restrictiva desalojando las partes dañadas.
- Operación y RNS.
- Estancia hospitalaria de cerca de un mes en USA, fase preparatoria y operación.
- Viajes entre Suecia y USA cada tres meses durante uno o dos años para ajustes y seguimiento según las necesidades de Edith.
Estamos ahorrando todo lo que podemos pero no será suficiente. Nunca pensé que algún día necesitaría pedir ayuda económica y ojalá nunca hubiera tenido que hacerlo. Pero estoy aquí con mi pequeña luchadora que tiene que sufrir lo que nunca un niño debiera sufrir y cuyo cuerpo ya no resiste a los daños de la enfermedad. Ella está en una situación urgente de llegar a USA y ser operada antes de que se aleje de nosotros.
Estamos enormemente agradecidos por toda la ayuda que se nos de - todas las aportaciones son importantes e indispensables.

Aidez Edith, 12 ans, à subir une opération au cerveau et à vaincre FIRES
Cette collecte de fonds a pour but de financer une opération cérébrale vitale aux États-Unis pour notre fille Edith, qui a souffert de FIRES - une maladie qui détruit la vie de notre adorable fille. L'opération, qui nécessite une technologie de pointe, n'est pas encore réalisable en Suède et coûte beaucoup d'argent. Nous sommes profondément reconnaissants pour toutes les contributions ! Obtenir de l'aide aux États-Unis est notre seule opportunité de redonner sa vie à Edith.
Quelques semaines après son septième anniversaire, Edith a été diagnostiquée sans prévenir de la maladie très agressive et rare FIRES (Feverile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome), qui affecte inexplicablement des enfants d'âge scolaire en parfaite santé suite à une infection / grippe. Une grande partie des enfants affectés ne survive pas à la phase aigüe de la maladie. Parmi ceux qui survivent, beaucoup souffrent de graves incapacités et tous souffrent d'épilepsie très grave qui brise leur vie.
Edith a survécu à la phase aiguë. Elle a été soignée plongée dans le coma grâce à un respirateur pendant quatre semaines. Plusieurs fois au cours de ces semaines, le service de santé a essayé de nous préparer au pire. Mais Edith n'a pas abandonné, elle a survécu!
Le désir de chirurgie cérébrale
Cela semble presque un peu irréel de l'écrire, mais je suis une mère dont le plus grand souhait est que mon enfant subisse une opération au cerveau. Je sais que nous ne pouvons pas obtenir toutes les garanties dans une opération, mais je sais ce que signifie l'alternative et que nous n'avons pas le choix. Pendant trois ans et demi, Edith a lutté chaque jour, piégée dans son propre corps, constamment en proie à de graves crises et à de graves effets secondaires conséquence des médicaments qu'elle doit prendre. Il est difficile de mettre des mots sur le désespoir et l'impuissance que nous ressentons dans la famille. Notre vie est complètement mise en pause. Nous sommes dans une sorte de bulle, en dehors de la «vie ordinaire», dans une crise permanente.
Nous voyons à quel point notre belle petite fille est tourmentée, et comment la maladie détruit son cerveau ainsi que les opportunités pour elle de se développer chaque jour qui passe.
Après avoir essayé tout ce que les soins de santé suédois ont à offrir, nous sommes maintenant en contact avec l'un des centres d'épilepsie les plus importants des États-Unis: l'hôpital primaire pour enfants Inter Mountain. Ils ont passé en revue les antécédents médicaux, les dossiers médicaux et les examens d'Edith et croient qu'en utilisant la dernière technologie établie, ils peuvent aider Edith. Quelle bonne nouvelle! Pour la première fois, nous voyons qu'il y a de l'espoir pour Edith.
Pace maker sur le cerveau
Le traitement qu'ils recommandent implique un certain nombre d'examens préparatoires et qu'Edith se fasse ensuite implanter un Pace maker sur le cerveau, qui peut réduire considérablement ses crises, améliorer son humeur et ses connaissances. La technologie, appelée Responsive Neurostimulator (RNS), est proposée dans tous les principaux centres d'épilepsie aux États-Unis, mais comme elle n'est pas encore proposée en Suède ou en Europe, les soins de santé suédois ne peuvent pas payer le traitement. Malheureusement, nous n'avons pas la possibilité d'attendre que la technologie RNS soit disponible en Suède. Nous luttons contre la montre alors que des attaques puissantes détruisent le cerveau d'Edith et ses opportunités de se développer chaque jour.
Description des coûts
Les soins avancés dont Edith a besoin sont estimés à environ 1,5 million de couronnes suédoises (150.000 euros) en coûts directs, qui paieront pour:
- Divers examens préparatoires pour s'assurer que la procédure se déroule en toute sécurité. Une partie de la phase d'investigation consiste, entre autres, à activer temporairement des électrodes dans le cerveau pour savoir où les crises commencent afin de savoir exactement comment le Pace maker doit être placé, et pour voir s'il est possible de combiner la technologie RNS avec la chirurgie restrictive, par laquelle des parties de la zone endommagée sont retirées.
-L’opération elle-même et la technologie RNS
- Environ un mois d’hospitalisation aux États-Unis pendant lequel les préparatifs et la chirurgie sont effectués
- Faire le trajet en avion entre la Suède et les États-Unis tous les trois mois pendant un à deux ans pour installer et adapter la technologie aux besoins d'Edith.
Nous allons, bien sûr, économiser autant que nous le pouvons, mais cela ne suffira pas. Je n'ai jamais pensé que je ferais appel à une aide financière et j'aurais vraiment aimé ne pas avoir à le faire. Mais je me tiens ici avec ma petite combattante qui a été forcé d'endurer plus qu'un petit enfant ne devrait avoir à le faire, et dont le corps ne va pas pouvoir supporter longtemps les dégâts causés par la maladie. Elle a un besoin urgent d´aller aux États-Unis pour une chirurgie cérébrale avancée, sinon nous perdrons progressivement notre fille Edith.
Nous sommes profondément reconnaissants pour toute l'aide que nous pouvons obtenir - toutes les contributions sont précieuses et font une différence!
Ma famille et moi nous dissocions totalement de toutes les formes de collecte non sérieuse au nom des enfants malades. Chaque centime servira à redonner vie à Edith.
