"Help make the Hello, Richmond! Children's Book"

Hello, Richmond! is a children's book about growing up in Richmond, Virginia. The Hello, Richmond! initiative  encourages a love of reading, community pride, ​and a sense of belonging among children and families. 

Hello, Richmond! will be written and designed based on input from our community survey and crowdfunded with community support. 


With your support, Hello, Richmond! will be given to families after their child is born. Richmond children will grow up with this special book. They will explore the pages of Hello, Richmond! and then discover these new places with their families. Hello, Richmond! will connect families to their city, as well as to one another. 

The Hello, Richmond! book is a gift for the community, made by the community. Your donation will help make this book happen! 


This initiative is led by the staff of Excellence in Children’s Early Language and Literacy (ExCELL), which is a program of the Literacy Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University. Brandylane Publishers  is a partner and the publisher of Hello, Richmond! 

The fundraising goal is $58,000; this will cover costs related to the book’s development, community engagement efforts, and the printing of 12,000    copies of Hello, Richmond! More than 9,000 of these books will be gifted to Richmond families. Hello, Richmond! will be printed in board book format, which is ideal for infants and toddlers.

Hello, Richmond! will also be available for purchase. Donations and proceeds will support the continued gifting of Hello, Richmond! to children in the Richmond area.
