Barrierefreies Bad – helft Rainer!
(Please scroll down for english version)

Barrier-free bathroom - help Rainer!

Our friend Rainer has been suffering from chordoma - an extremely rare bone cancer - since 2012. So far, there is no therapy available for this type of tumour. No wonder - there are only about 300 known cases throughout Europe. Of course, the big pharmaceutical companies have no interest in investing money in research and so they are experimenting with drugs that have been successfully used for other types of cancer - although it is known that chordomas do not respond to drugs or radiation or chemotherapy. Only surgical removal of the tumour can help. In this type of cancer, a slow-growing, destructive tumour is formed, usually at the lower end of the spine. In Rainer's case, the tumour initially affected the coccyx.

There are only a few centres of excellence and a handful of doctors across Europe who dare to tackle such a disease. Rainer has found such a doctor with the help of the Chordoma Foundation, an American organization based in North Carolina that is dedicated to bringing together specialists and patients around the world. He has been operated on countless times because the tumour has unfortunately become active again and again.

Currently, he's been in hospital for four and a half months. He had a 42-hour surgery spread over five days, removing a tumor the size of a handball at the lower end of the spine. The tumor had already affected the coccyx, the sacrum and the 5th lumbar vertebra. In order to be able to remove all this, some nerves had to be severed during the operation, which are "responsible" for the lower extremities. Since the operation at the beginning of August, he could no longer leave his bed on his own. He will not be able to walk properly after his discharge from the hospital because he will no longer have control over his lower legs and feet. In order to enable him to live in his familiar surroundings, it will be necessary to carry out some alterations in his apartment. A barrier-free bathroom with a ground-level shower is particularly important. This renovation is subsidized by the health insurance, but the subsidy is far from sufficient. It is missing approx. € 10,000, - to convert the bathroom accordingly.

Rainer is expected to be discharged from hospital at the beginning of 2020. This will be followed by an approximately six-week rehabilitation program so that he will probably be home by the end of February or beginning of March. So that he does not have to move into a nursing facility in the meantime, the conversion measures should be completed by then. It will be a very long and difficult road for him, but he is a fighter and has an unrestrained will to live. How he has endured the previous treatment with the numerous setbacks has my highest admiration!

Please share this link with as many people as possible. There are countless people in Rainer's environment whose contact details I don't have and who would certainly be willing to support this project with a few Euros. I am sure that we can do this together if everyone donates only a small amount - as much as he/she can spare. I thank you all in advance!
